I have noticed two ridge like bumps on top of Shane's head as well. I just felt them for the first time last night as my DH did his bath the three nights prior. I have a call into Cranial Tech right now. Please keep me updated with your situation. Now I am worried too.

All this talk about the bumps on the head is starting to scare me. Cole gets his helmet on December 1st. Is this something that is really common? Does it happen to everyone? Just want to know what to expect....- Cole gets his DOCband on the 1st of DecemberFrom: L R <leilarem@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Thursday, November

20, 2008 9:00:37 AMSubject: Hard bump on Maysa's head - Merrick's Mom?

About two weeks ago I posted that my daughter Maysa had a bump on her head that was sticking out. It seems like it has grown in size so on Sunday we took her in for some X-rays. At first, they told us that we would get the results back within 2 days. Well, today is Thursday and when I called this morning they still wouldn't tell me what the results were (or as they say: the results are not in yet).

I am worried that it could be a case of craniosynostosis. Is anybody familiar with those bumps? Oh yeah, and by the way, it is not a lymph node because it doesn't move. It feels more like a hard piece of bone sticking out on the back right side of her head towards the skull base.

Was it Merrick's mom who had also noticed a similar bump on her son's head? If so, is it gone? What are the doctors saying about it? What are you doing about it?

Parents who had experience with craniosynostosis, what does it feel like?

no, most kids don't get bumps. Of the bumps I've heard of I don't

remember any real problems. Sometimes it is a swollen lymph node, that

you probably wouldn't notice if your kids weren't in a band (lymph

nodes swell when they are working to fight off an infection such as a

cold). Sydney wore her starband for 5 mo and didn't have any weird bumps.

One thing to remember that many posts here are questions about

unusually situations. People don't always write to say " no problems,

everything is great " . If they did we would have a lot more posts :-)

I called Kaiser last week to try and find out if the CT scans came out OK and they did. This said, they couldn't tell my what the bumps were so I am taking Maysa to see her pediatrician on Wednesday in hopes to get a better answer.

My question is: if this is nothing to worry about, what is it? Anybody who feels it goes like hmmm, that's strange, it's hard as a bone...

Hopefully Cole won't get any of it. I will keep the board posted.

I'm not sure what the bumps are on Maysa's head, I'm having a hard

time imagining what they feel and look like. What my son had between

the closure of the helmet is basically fluid buildup or some get

similar bumps around the lymphnodes around the ears. I wouldn't say

it's common, as much as I would say, it's not uncommon. If that makes

any sense. It happens but not to everyone and it's really nothing to

worry about. At least you're aware of it so will know what it is if

it starts happening to your son. The bump didn't appear on my son

until he got his second band, so it might have to do with length of

wear in some instances. It was 4 months before it turned up on him,

and it went away after about a month and a half after graduation.

The only bone that my daughter got with the band was one on the side of her head where the velcro was...the ortho said it would go away. maybe its something similar.

I wonder if any of the helmet/band companies have done any research on this? Because they definitely dont mention the hard bumps as possible side effects. Are people getting these mostly with the DOCband?- Cole gets his DOCband soooooooon.....From: <nwilkens2275@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Monday, November 24, 2008

It's not just the DOCBand, it's other bands as well. You would have

to do a search on any research done. I'm not sure there's much to

research, the ridges I am referring to, they know what the cause is

and they go away, so I personally don't need more information than

that. I also personally wouldn't call it a side effect because again,

it's temporary and it's not debilitating. Like the one mom posted, I

think it's a great analogy with the wedding ring. You wear something

long enough, and it can leave sort of an indentation. My left ring

finger is a size smaller than my right because of my wedding band,

but if I ever stopped wearing my ring, eventually my ridge from my

band would return to it's normal size. The ridges and swollen

lymphnodes go away after graduation. Anything other than that most

likely has a deeper root to the problem than just wearing a band.

(For instance, one other mom posted a while back about some strange

swelling/bump her son had and it turned out to be a form of cranio,

but the band did not cause it, it was already there).
