Guest guest
I agree with the wonderful advice that Patti and Robin gave you! I just want to add that you might want to add some SCD goat yogurt. Start out with only 1/10 of a teaspoon. The yogurt really helps to speed up the gut healing. Guest guest
, You are in a tough spot. One of the issues is dealing with school staff. I know they can be difficult. When it comes to Katera's diet, I have learned the hard way. We have ALL new staff this year and I decided it is just plain none of their business. The instructions I've given this year are: She eats NOTHING except what I send. Period. That's all. I've told them that she is on a special diet but.... no details and it is truly none of their business. I have stated that it is CRITICAL that she does not EVER eat anything other than what I send.... and that is in her IEP. They don't question me anymore. She eats pretty much the same thing every day for lunch (I rotate between two basic lunch meals) and I do more variety at home. It's just simpler that way. She is only beginning to self-feed, so I'm limited to foods that are easier for her to manage when spoon feeding anyway. If they are wondering why he is eating " only meat " you might tell them that the veggies are baked IN to the meat.... but they are mistaken if they think it's " only meat " then. It's just wrong for them to be questioning you on this. If they won't heat up his green beans.... can you send them warm in a thermos or something, if that's the only way he'll eat them? Or would he eat them cold if he had some kind of a dip? SCD ketchup.... or honey/mustard? He could still do ripe bananas at school.... but you'll need to send bananas along that are at the proper stage, not let them just give him bananas they might have there. Believe me, I know what a trick it is to have a ripe banana always on hand.... it's not easy. I always have about three bunches of bananas, each at a different stage of ripening.... trying to prepare for the next few days. I go into " banana panic " if we're out and I go to the store and all there is is a huge table full of bright GREEN bananas! I've been known to pull the produce guy aside and beg him to go retrieve bananas that they've just pulled to throw away. They think I'm nuts! You stated here that you have tried flaxseed as an egg substitute. Do you mean since he's been on SCD? Or previously? You do know that flaxseed is not legal, right? At this point, with a child that is severely limited in what foods he can have, you are going to have a real challenge on your hands. You need to come up with some tried-and-true basics for school and try new things at home. I definitely think that it is too soon for the raw foods, and that this has probably impaired his progress. I know you have a dilemma with school and all, but putting these foods in too soon is just shooting yourself in the foot.... and meaning that you'll have a harder time getting past this.... if you ever do. When you say he can tolerate " salad " .... what do you mean by that? Is it just lettuce only? Or what else is in it... other raw veggies? What dressing? Is he anaphylactic to eggs? Or is this a sensitivity that shows up in tests? If phenols are an issue, have you tried the No Fenol enzymes? I just think that if you could get a few months of 100% compliance on all SCD legal, peeled and cooked only, you would begin to get some real gut healing and some of his food intolerances would begin to fade. This is what we've seen with other kids. I hate to tell you that I just think SCD might be too difficult for you to accomplish.... but I really think it might be, unless you get some private help from an SCD counselor or something. It would be good to sit down and brainstorm a few " sure thing " meals that you can cook large quantities of ahead.... and keep in the freezer.... and some alternative snack ideas that will work, AND that he will accept. Do you have enough actual support at home? Husband fully supportive of SCD.... other relatives and friends that understand, etc? DAN doctor or ?? Patti Re: he can only handle 4 foods. He is not so much a picky eater except when it comes to vegetables that are soft. we cant do any of the pancakes becase of the eggs we have tried flaxseed to do the banna pancakes and then it takea about 5 bannas to make an amount that looks like something.I am greatfull for all the thoughts I am getting it and beleave that the raw foods are the problem Iam just not sure how to remdy it at school. He gets snacks at school usually a banna or a pear If I take away the pear (which I will) It Leaves him with meat and bannas and I cant always keep up with them. I run out then they arent ripe so we are back to meat. He is on the yougert very small amount and he han another round of die off two days after starting it .by the way how long does the yougert stay good. Iam not sure I would know what bad yougert would tast like. Like I said my biggest worry is school. He wants food and he reacts badly to almost all including honey. He has got a understanding teacher but I don't know for how much He has warn out everyone in the past. Please don't take this as Iam not listening Iam . Iam very worn out and it pains me that he wants to eat thes things and I have to tell him no. I wish it was a vacation time so I can do the cooked fruit. He is not home enough to hold out other food to get him to eat it becase I cant send him to schol with out eating. When we did the intro dier I eased him in to it he ate chicken broth cooked peares just becase he ws hungry. but ttwo days in to it he got verry sick he got to were he couldn't ever move himself on a pillow he could't walk he at its worst he his eyes were rolling back in his head and I thought he was going to go unconcious. It was so scarry we took him to irgent care and the gave him and IV and that helped a lot but the next day he was still not eating it was his 6 day of a stand off. Iam just feeling really helpless right now. I fell crazy when someome is trying to be nice and gives him a banana and its green and i have to tell him he cant eat it the person thinks I have lost it. I am hearing you and greatfull for what is said Iam just trying to fill in the missing parts of the full picture . Thanks so very much Recent Activity a.. 18New Members Visit Your Group
Guest guest
<<Patti, thank you for your info. I thought that I was doing scd 100% I was given some wrong advice about the raw food. I have taken it out but he willnot eat fruit cooked>> ..... have you tried cooking any fruit in chunks or slices.... and then freezing them? Some kids will eat it this way..... kind of like little popsicles.... when they don't like the mushiness of cooked fruit. <<I have ben able to get him to eat a few bights of squash that was a big step. I said he could have five minets on a video game for every bight he ate he got 60 minets. I cant get him to do it every day but we are moving forward >> This is an EXCELLENT strategy! Keep up the good work.... I know it seems like just the tiniest bit of success... but you can build on that. Good for him! << He takes emzines and a big spoon of yourgert every day.>> That's great. Are you seeing any positive changes from either one? << I still beleive in this diet and and know we can do it. I just get so over whelemed some times. And cant think of things to make.>> Believe me, I know exactly what you mean by that. I know that feeling of my mind just going completely blank when it comes to what's for dinner. I think it's a sure sign of burn-out.... something I struggle with all the time. ((((((()))))))) << you asked about eggs. Eggs cause anger and it gets pretty bad. >> Then it sounds like eggs are something you should definitely hold off on for now. If there is some obvious, observable negative from a food, I think you should leave it out..... maybe he will be okay with eggs some day. Just don't use the flax seed as a replacement! Okay? That's very difficult... that you have two kids on the diet and one can eat things the other can't. To keep my sanity, if I were you, I would try to find recipes they can BOTH eat.... and not have the other things around at all. That is tough, though.... I know. Not fair for her. I wish I lived close enough to come over and sit down with you to figure out some recipes. Hopefully, some others can chime in with some good, easy, egg and nut free ideas for you.... or other tips for sneaking some more good foods in. I just feel that he will keep making more and more progress toward eating more foods that you never thought he would accept.... if you just keep on keeping on. He's already showing good signs that he might, with accepting the bites of squash. Hang in there, . Patti
