Guest guest
Becki, It could be allergies that are causing the eczema type rash/dry skin thing. Maybe, while waiting for the doc to see the baby she can try a few small things to try to determine if it is allergies, like put the baby on a soy formula rather than a milk based one, if the baby is on formula. Also check the clothing the baby is wearing. Most people are not allergic to 100% cotton clothing, but most baby clothes are not 100% cotton and sleepers have the fire retardant chemicals on them that some babies are allergic to. My nephew was diagnosed as having " eczema " when he really had serious allergies. His head, neck, chest, face and limbs all had huge patches of red, itchy, flaky skin. We used to put socks on his hands all the time so he wouldn't rip his skin off with the scratching. He was eventually diagnosed as being anaphylactic with many things and allergic to just about everything else (including soy formula-he had to go on a rice based formula) I, on the other hand, was born with a horrible rash that was eased by my mother having to slather me in a black goopy ointment and sit me in the sun. I don't know why that worked but it did. I hope the baby is feeling better soon. mom of 5 with CF, who babysat an anaphylactic nephew for months before 's diagnosis. Guest guest
Hi Becki, Eczema can be helped greatly by increasing the amount of omega-3 essential fatty acids in the diet. If the mom is nursing, she should eat more fatty fish (salmon and herring, for example) and eat flax seeds or flax seed oil. The DHA is also so crucial for the rapidly growing infant brain. If your sister isn't nursing, she might consider adding flax seed oil to the formula and infant cereals. If your sister is nursing, she might also cut out foods that contain food coloring. My daughter's eczema was really bad until we cut out all food and meds that contained red dye #40 (luckily, she outgrew this).
