My son stopped drinking milk when he was two and we tried every trick

we knew to make it drink it. :o)

Now that he is gfcf (almost three years later, and now 6 months in

the diet), I do not worry about it anymore, and I only use it for

cooking.

But he has always been drinking tea, juice and water. How about

diluting his milk with a milk sub? Start with like 2 tbsps of milk

sub in his one cup of milk? then increase the dose slowly until he

will no longer know what milk tastes like?

I know that coconut milk is another alternative for example; but

there are tons of different choices. One good one is dari-free, which

is a potato based milk in the powder form.

I do not use soy milk, b/c I try to avoid soy anyway, so those are

the alternatives, besides rice milks and almond milks.

Hope this helps.

Rebelah; everyone is different; I have just enough lactose intolerance that I

drink

whole milk (there is no milk sugar in the fat); one the other hand if the fat is

causing steatorrhea (fat in stools), maybe you could experiment a bit and try

a comprimise, like 2% before drasticly changing them to skim milk. This is

more significant if both boys have cf. Can't your fiane just buy his own milk

with his own money, anyway? He is not responsible for the boys' medical

care unless he marries you and then adopts them! Just typing out loud again!

Love to you and the boys,

Milk question

What sort of milk do ya'all use in your households?

Since January the boys and I have been living with my mom, and

neither of us drinks milk, so I have been buying just whole milk

because it's good for Ricky because of the calories. Andy's a little

guy so it couldn't hurt for him to have extra calories too.

But we're hopefully moving in with my fiance in January and he

drinks skim (non fat) milk.

Here I'm envisioning a refrigerator full of milk, because both Dave

(fiance) and the boys go through gallons of milk per week. I know I

could get milk cheaper at Costco if I bought it two gallons of the

same variety at a time, so it would be easier to switch only to skim

(and healthier for all of us).

My question again is what sort of milk does everyone buy? Or do

you buy more than one kind? Ricky's weight and height are in the

80th-909th percentile and Andy is past the age (3 or 4 I think)

where a child is supposed to have whole milk, even though he's

small. So I'm thinking it's okay but I'd like to hear what you guys

have to say.

Thanks in advance!

Becky,

I make sure we always have whole milk available for my child with

cf. Sometimes I add powdered milk to it to increase calories a

bit. He is not thin (between 75th and 90th percentiles always), but

he's super-active and can use the extra fat and energy. My other

two children don't have cf and drink whole milk, too. They are

actually thinner than my kid with cf, so the milkfat doesn't seem to

be hurting them.

Right now there is both whole and skim milk in my fridge. The skim

was on sale and I've been cooking more than usual for the holidays,

so it goes in the food, and the kids still get whole milk on cereal

or with Ovaltine mixed in for drinking.

Unless you have a really small refridgerator, I'd say get both kinds

of milk. If you only get to choose one milk type to buy, get the

milk for the kid. It's just the first of many concessions your new

hubby will have to make for the benefit of the children (cf or no.)

Might as well break him in now. ;)

We buy 2 litres of full cream milk for the kids of which Eilish drinks

almost all of it each day. Then we buy 1 litres of no fat milk for us.

Works out easy enough. Eilish also knows only to drink the milk in the

blue bottle.

We buy whole milk and half and half. When making Christian's shakes I only

use half and half. My husband only uses the milk when making his famous mashed

potatoes. Christian uses milk for cereal and drinking.

My husband and both girls drink reduced fat milk and I drink soy

milk.

Kristy has not liked whole milk for quite some time, far to creamy

and sickly.

It would probably be healthier for you and Andy as well as your fiance to drink

the skim milk but NOT necessarily for Ricky! I have a fridge full of milk all

the time since I drink 2% but my hubby (skinny, underweight thing that he is)

and must have whole milk. I also have heavy whipping cream in there all

the time to add to 's whole milk! This is a good way to get the calories

in without a fight, so if he likes the whole milk, I wouldn't change it.

I dont know if I am correct at all on this and I am sure all docs are different.

But, I was told be our dietician that the boys need to be on whole milk. Which,

of course has helped my hips a bit, lol. So, I keep whole milk.

We have 3 different kinds of milk in our fridge! DH and I drink skim, my oldest

drinks soy (is milk intolerant), and Leila drinks whole milk. We also add

nonfat dry milk powder to double the protein for her, since kids in her age

group can be picky about eating meat. While I was at my folks for Xmas my Mom

had some heavy whipping cream and added some to Leila's milk. To my surprise,

she loved it, so maybe we'll get some of that from time to time too. Right now

we really aren't having a weight problem, but I can see how it would come in

handy. Sometimes I wish we had 2 refridgerators! I'm with though, if it

isn't broken.....stay with the whole milk. :)

Well, this is really old-fashioned, and may not be good with enzymes that are

really good (meaning we now have cholesterol!), but my mom cheated and added

half and half to the whole milk--fooled me and does not add extra milk sugar

(lac

tose); Now I am a little more coy at my advanced age and just buy whole milk.

I have one kid who is lactose intolerant and allergic to the cassein (protein)

in the

non-fat part of the milk and drinks soy; one who scrupulously uses 2%, and one

who uses whole milk--fortunately, they are very grown up, have their own

families

and we are NOT sharing refrigerators any more! We are so funny on this great

big and caring list; we just take that topic all the way out and all the way in.

If

you do not want variety, this is NOT the list for you! I love all of you,

corporate, trade-agreement attorney)

Hi Becky,

Back when Ang used to drink milk I did buy skim and whole. Like you I let my son

have the whole also, he is 2 years older but has always been on the skinny side.

But for reasons unfathomable to me, Ang quit drinking milk years ago (she takes

Citracal, a calcium supplement recommended by the CF dietician) so now I just

buy skim. And Nick adjusted to skim with no complaints.

good luck,

M

Although JC is pacreatic sufficient he is very slim and has a very

small appetite so we struggle to add calories. We have been adding

whipping cream to his whole milk for a while. He loves it. In the

morning I make sure he drinks a glass of milk with cream and I add

his liquid vitamins to it. That's the only way I can get the foul

tasting vitamins in him.
