Guest guest
Hi, It is common misconception that you malabsorb medications after the surgery. You do malabsorb fat because the body has a special absorption mechanism that allows fat to be absorbed across the watery surface of the gut. You would also impair the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals for the same reasons. Iron and B12 are example of chemicals witch do not dissolve easily in water and thus your body has developed special transport mechanisms to help get more of these vital nutrients into the body. Drugs and medications are not like this. As far as I am aware no drug requires a special transport mechanism to be absorbed to work. Thus all drugs are absorbed fine. Now there is still more to the story... Many of the medications that my patients take before surgery are no longer needed after surgery, Like high blood pressure medications, diabetes medications and cholesterol medications, So we often change a person's drug treatment after surgery but it is not because of malabsorption. There also some few drugs that we warn people against taking: Tylenol, Alcohol, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Motrin and similar drugs. Other wise you should be OK. RR Rutledge, M.D., F.A.C.S.
