Guest guest
Christa, When my oldest son (now 26 yrs old) was a baby, he got thrush and a yeasty bum rash after a round of antibiotics for an ear infection. I assume the yeast was all through his system, literally from top to bottom. The doctor prescribed Nystatin... and we went through three rounds of it, but the yeast infection just came back as soon as we finished the med. ($$$ and all out of pocket at that time!!) Now, keep in mind that this was MANY years ago.... he was my first baby and I was a mere 26 yrs old myself then. I knew NOTHING about diet, nutrition, etc. Probiotics were unheard of... you couldn't even buy them in capsule form, etc. Anyway, after much frustration with the ineffectiveness of the Nystatin and my poor baby being just miserable, I finally took him to my auntie, who lived in a city a few hours away..... who was a naturopathic doctor. She told me to buy some good live-culture yogurt.... which, in those days you could only find in health food stores. He was only 5 months old, and totally breastfed at the time.... so she advised me to take a very small amount of the yogurt... about 1/2 teaspoon.... and just wipe in around inside his mouth. All over the red thrushy blisters inside his cheeks, and then just let him swallow that little bit. I did this twice a day, and the thrush & the yeast rash on his bottom was GONE within a week, never to return. I think you could do the same with just acidophilus in a capsule... just open it up and put a small amount of the powder inside baby's cheek, if you don't want to try yogurt yet. I have a feeling that yogurt might have some other advantage, but just the live acidophilus might have the same effect. By the way, my aunt said to try the yogurt first.... and then do gentian violet if that didn't work. It did, so we never did have to mess with the g. violet. I know that stuff works great... but I've heard it stains something terrible. I'll admit I have no idea... but I was just wondering if gentian violet kills off other good flora in the gut? Just a thought. good luck, Patti Re: ... having tummy issues... when and how to introduce yogurt... Sheila, thank you for your help. I really appreciate it. > > My poor baby doesn't seem to tolerate yeast well at all, and she's > > getting yeasty again so I want to get that under control. It's not > > bothering me at all. What > symptoms does she have? She's breastfed, so is my toddler. Both have yeast rashes in the diaper area right now. Just red and puffy, no blisters. The toddler doesn't seem to care at all. The baby cries a lot when she's yeasty. Her rash is more raised and bumpy (whereas the toddler is just red). She also gets thrush (and that really bothers her, too). The first time she broke out, she was 2 weeks old and she actually looked like she had baby acne. I treated the thrush with genetian violet, and her face and diaper area cleared up. It would come back as soon as I'd get it cleared up, though. I treated her two more times, and she got a virus (fever) and so I took her into the doctor. The yeast was flared up, too, and so was her face. The doctor put us both on diflucan and I was amazed at how fast her " baby acne " totally cleared up, too. She's had a little bit of yeast issues since then, but when I started on the diet, she cleared up. She had thrush again last week (none on her face), and I used the genetian violet. It didn't totally take care of it, and she has the bumpy diaper rash back. She's been fussy, too. Oh, it doesn't seem to affect the toddler much at all, but she did have a few red bumps around her mouth for awhile when all the stuff was going on with the baby. I don't think she does now, though. Guest guest
Let me throw in that our dan doctor's on staff registered dietician told me that I should be giving my children probiotics from birth. She says to just open up the capsule and sprinkle it into their mouth. Meleah Re: ... having tummy issues... when and how to introduce yogurt... Sheila, thank you for your help.
