Canned pumpkin and squash?

This has probably been asked a million times, but is there a legal

canned pumpkin that we can use? Also, Whole Foods sells a canned

butternut squash. It says 100 percent organic butternut squash. Would

this be legal? If not, why? I can't use it because my son won't

tolerate butternut squash, but I have a friend that is thinking of

starting SCD with her daughter. I told her she couldn't use it, and

when she asked why I didn't really have an answer. I usually just stay

on the safe side and cook everything myself so I know that it is okay.

But, in a pinch it would be nice to know if something like this could

be used.

I thought it probably was and that is why I figured the canned

butternut squash would be illegal. The problem is that I don't know

why they are illegal if the can says 100 percent organic pumpkin or

100 percent organic butternut squash. I can accept that pretty easy,

I just say, " okay, it's not legal, fine I won't use it. " But,

explaining to someone who has to really know why is hard. She won't

accept, " it's just not legal, so don't use it. "

Hi Debbie,

Canned fruits and Veggies can have ingredients not listed on the

labels. Some of it depends on the wording of the labels and some of

it depends on the type of food that has been canned.

Frozen squash is legal. Canned squash/pumpkin isn't.

I wrote up part of the reason why at

http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#homemade

Some more details:

Part of the problem with canning is that the sterilization

temperatures ( and times) used in canning fruits and vegetables can

change the texture and taste profiles of foods. Some producers will

add a little something to make the product more palatable and

acceptable to the consumer. These are usually SCD illegals. If they

fall under 2% of the weight of the product they don't have to be

recorded on the labels.

Also processing aids used in the production of canned fruits and

veggies can be illegal: they can include gums, sugar, agar etc...

Fresh or frozen fruit or veg. are SCD safe (check your labels),

canned is not (exception to this listed in BTVC.)
