In 2008-2009, Health Outreach Partners conducted its fourth annual National Needs Assessment. It sought to gather information on new and emerging farmworker populations, outreach program trends and challenges, farmworker health needs and barriers to care, outreach funding, and cultural competency needs. The needs assessment employed five methods of data collection: online surveys with outreach managers, telephone surveys with health center administrators, focus groups with Migrant and Seasonal Head Start parents, community forums with outreach staff, as well as existing data in the migrant health field. Outreach Strategies to Facilitate Adherence to Diabetes Treatment Plans April 8, 2010 at 11:00 AM PST Once again, diabetes was cited as the top concern for farmworkers in HOP’s National Needs Assessment. To assist organizations with meeting this constant challenge, HOP has invited experts from the field to share their approaches. Learn how other programs employ outreach strategies to facilitate adherence to diabetes management and treatment plans. Topics will include identification of outreach-specific challenges in addressing diabetes treatment, effective approaches to diabetes care, and existing resources for responding to diabetes issues. Examining Challenges and Successes of Reaching Out to Male Farmworkers May 6, 2010 at 11:00AM PST While most of the farmworkers in the U.S. are male, adult males comprise of only 25% of migrant and seasonal farmworkers seen by migrant health centers (UDS 2008). Male farmworkers appear to seek medical care less frequently for a variety of reasons, including difficulty taking time off of work, lack of assistance programs available for men, and a lack of knowledge about the health care system. Given the physically-demanding nature of agricultural work, male farmworkers need accessible medical and social services to maintain their health and wellbeing. Outreach programs across the nation are taking creative steps to reach out to this underserved population. During this call, panelists highlight their unique approaches for reaching out to male farmworkers. Reaching Immigrant Communities in an Anti-Immigrant Climate June 3, 2010 at 11:00AM PST Many immigrant populations come to this country in search of a better life, only to be met by what some would characterize as a hostile anti-immigrant climate. This negative environment, marked by a heightened presence of anti-immigrant legislation and discrimination, makes it increasingly difficult for outreach programs to effectively reach out to immigrant populations. The purpose of this call is to sensitize outreach program staff to this topic and present best practices for reaching immigrant communities, especially those that do not have legal documentation status.
