Guest guest
There's no set brand of legal apple cider. Just make sure that you do not buy apple juice. If it's not in a refrigerated area, don't buy it. It's not cider. If it is refrigerated but says juice, don't buy it. If you can get it straight from the orchard, even better in my opinion. We went apple picking last weekend, and I brought home 5 gallons of cider. It freezes really well. I have it in my deep freezer right now. In fact, many orchards have jugs already frozen if you're going to be traveling some distance home or just know that you want to freeze some of it. Just ask. Most grocery stores will start carrying apple cider within the next month. Guest guest
Carol, Sheila, Meleah, etc, Here's my point...if you find freshly pressed, cloudy, unadulterated, refrigerated apple JUICE, it really doesn't matter that officially it should be called cider, what matters is that it is the product that Elaine was describing, right? I get it that the product I bought is disqualified for being bottled if for no other reason, but if it were fresh and refrigerated and still called juice, I think it would be the right stuff regardless of the name. Guess I better make plans to go to n or Oak Glen this fall to get the fresh stuff...whether they call it cider or juice. Lorilyn Re: apple cider There's no set brand of legal apple cider. Lorilyn, I defer to Patti, Sheila, Mimi and other veterans here. You've got me when it comes to semantics as I constantly come under fire for telling people when they adulterate the diet it should no longer be called SCD. I know a rose is a rose, but Gertrude Stein apparently wasn't into fruit LOL! FRESHLY PRESSED apples are approved and " cider " usually is the most apt description. Mr. Webster gave two definitions for cider but we see from #1 he was not SCD :-) He also did not discuss undisclosed ingredents in processed, bottled or canned or frozen or Tetra Pak juices. Cider Etymology: Middle English sidre, from Anglo-French, from Late Latin sicera strong drink, from Greek (Septuagint) sikera, from Hebrew shEkhAr 1 : fermented apple juice often made sparkling by carbonation or fermentation in a sealed container 2 : the expressed juice of fruit (as apples) used as a beverage or for making other products (as applejack) Juice Main Entry: 1juice Pronunciation: 'jüs Function: noun Etymology: Middle English jus, from Anglo-French, broth, juice, from Latin; akin to Old Norse ostr cheese, Greek zymE leaven, Sanskrit yusa broth 1 : the extractable fluid contents of cells or tissues Carol F. Guest guest
Hi, I don't believe this would be legal. I drink apple cider all the time and on your list of ingredient there should be only one ingredient listed which is " Apple cider " . If they add other stuff to it, I wouldn't buy it. Hope this helps Lorraine apple cider >I purchase " Zeigler's Old-fashioned Apple Cider " . That is the exact name. It >was sitting in ice in the produce section. The ingredients are: apples, >potassium sorbate, malic(apple)acid. > > Is this legal? I confess I do not know if it is legal. > > Thanks > Sue > 7 yr old son, distractibility, SCD 6 mths > > >

Guest guest
Okay, Carol.... but the ingredients she listed for that cider were: <<The ingredients are: apples, potassium sorbate, malic(apple)acid.>> I am sure we are not required to have sodium benzoate in our apple cider... and it would be preferable to have " only apples " . Maybe that is a little more clear. Patti Re: apple cider > > I would not use this cider. When you said " ONLY apple juice " i checked the book and quoted Elaine as I so often do :-). Carol F.
