Guest guest
Hi: My doctorate is in jurisprudence not medicine, but I will try to answer from personal experience only. Bacteria and mold colonize the cavities in the body, and saying that a person is staph or pseudomonas free is probably not being fair in the diagnosis. When I was ten and was suffering from sinus infections, I developed nasal polyps, I was diagnosed as having food allergies and put on a strict diet. I had little strength to fight off the infections that ravaged me. I was able to talk my way off the diet, gained weight, felt better but still had polyps galore. It is more likely the polyps were caused by bacteria infections rather than allergies as it has only been the past few years that I haven't grown polyps. In my opinion (stand back for this one) staph a. and pseudomonas, aspergillus, etc. will always inhabit a person with CF, as they inhabit people who don't have the disease. They can hang around in mucous and though we may have productive coughs, the production of mucous is what makes this disease so insidious. By maintaining a regimen of prevention as best we can and being disciplined enough to do whatever is necessary to fight the infections when they begin to take over, we hope to overcome the culprits. My two mutations are: W1282X and A455E. My first DNA was done at Baylor Univ., Dallas, and the second study was done at Uni. of North Carolina. I go to the CF adult center at Yale, and they want to eventually put me in a bottle for display. I get to finish what's in the bottle first! She has positive nose culture and positive throat culture but negative bronchoscope. Our doctor tells me that the pseudomonas is draining on to the throat but is not in the lungs because of the antibiotic we keep her on so it eradicates it before it can.
