black mucus in stools

My 2 and 1/2 yr old wcf has had some wierd stools the past few days.

He also has been vomiting (which is a somewhat normal situation for

him) a lot more. The stools are really gross--they are normally a

thick, pasty green but now they are orangy, runnier, have mucus and

black mucusy streaks in it. I don't see any red blood or anything

else. He is also pooping in the middle of the night. His GI dr

recently (5 days ago) increased his erythromycin dose which is

supposed to help move along his intestines. could this be causing

the wierd stools? He is also on reglan and prilosec.

Help!

I'd be very concerned with black mucusy stools, especially since you

say he's on erythromycin and pooping round the clock.

Though you're not seeing red blood, you should have a stool culture

taken to check for occult blood. He could have small bleeds from the

intestines caused by the antibiotic.

The prilosec and erythromycin will cause a B vitamin and magnesium

deficiency. He's losing necessary and vital nutrients and magnesium,

which will only cause a vicious cycle. He needs a good enteric-coated

probiotic and really low fat/low fiber diet right now. Taurine will

help too. Then you might consider beginning him on the crataegus

therapy since you say his normal stools are thick, pasty green.

But right now, there's too much inflammation going on -- as seen by

the orange, oily stools. No butter, cheese, peanut butter, bacon, or

any oils other than olive and canola. None of that high fat

inflammatory crap dieticians tell you to cram into these kids. His

gut needs calming first.

Best to you,

Kim
