Hi Guys:

I had my MGB on May 31 and weighed 304 pounds. Today I weigh 237 pounds. I had

two

plateau periods of about three weeks each with no loss during that time. In the

first instance

the three week period was followed by a six pound weight loss and my most recent

plateau

was followed by a 9 pound weight loss. So what's that..about 67 pounds in less

than four

months? Hmmm. Not bad, huh?

But more importantly: 1. My acid reflux is gone. I had it for 20 years and took

medication

every day before surgery. I had three incidents after surgery but since the

second month,

reflux is a distant memory. 2. I have been off blood pressure medication since

surgery. My

blood pressure is normal. 3. I sleep all night. I do not wake up gasping for

air. I do not need

three or more pillows or a recliner to sleep in. 4. I am off arthritis

medication. 5. I have had

three headaches for which I took Vioxx. I got at least three a week prior to

surgery and they

were so bad I went to bed. The three I have had were not enjoyable..but not bad

enough to

go to bed. 5. I fit in airplane seats (Ask Amy P, we both fit). And I fit in

restaurant booths.

And I fit in those white plastic lawn chair thingies. 6. I can move freely,

walk up and down

steps the way normal people do and I eat and feel satisfied when I'm done. 7.

The guilt over

what I eat, how much, what it contains, yadda yadda yadda is gone. I no longer

worry. I just

eat and sooner or later the weight will come off.

The down side? I have to be nearer to a bathroom that I did before surgery. My

trips are

now very frequent compared to the past. I am currently experimenting with my

dietary

choices, supplements, etc. to see if I can improve this annoying problem. This

is the only

downside from my perspective. Bathroom problems and I were not strangers before

surgery

either...so this is ok. I can handle this. I can work through this by making

some different

choices with food.

I haven't responded much to what's been going on. Like I said before, when I was

a kid and

my sister or a friend said stuff I didn't want to hear I used to hum really loud

and then if they

still didn't shut up I'd sing LA LA LA LA LA really loudly. So...I'm still

here, in land,

loving my new life, singing LA LA LA LA LA and just being grateful for each new

day and

for the quality that this surgery has given to this one little (formerly big)

life in southern

land!

Flo from land

67 pounds of ugly fat gone forever!

At 237 pounds....5 pounds more than the day I got married in 1966!

Going to my 40th class reunion in October the thinnest I've showed myself at a

reunion since

the 1965 one (we have them every five years and I've never missed one!)

How wonderful to hear your message. Good for you for being patient this was very

important for me to

hear that I need to realize that this process may take more time than others. I

am planning on taking

this whole thing a day at a time.

I think your post will be a welcomed message to many in this group.

Way to Go Flo !!!

Your success is wonderful ! I will say that T's website was the first

thing I read when I came home from surgery 9/13 (not a good thing to see) I

had my freaking out period and now I think i'm getting better...the first

thing I did to begin this mental healing is to get off this MGB-TRUTH list,

It was more than I wanted to read, and I left my surgery in the hands of

God, I will leave my future in His hands as well. I believe that more than

anything the human mind is extremly strong, and if you constantly think bad

and negative things...then you will " will " those things to happen. So I am

now aware of what to tell my PCP to watch for signs for and thats it...i'm

going to focus on me and my new health body. I am not even 2 weeks post op

and am already losing so much. I hope to be where you are in four months.

I am afraid to eat, i've tried some mashed potatoes, and i'm still just

scared to eat anything that's not liquid.

I would like to get onto the post-op list if anyone knows how to do this and

can instruct me i'd sure appreciate it.

I wish you continued success on your journey.

Hi ,

I think to get on the post op list you go to egroups.com then type mgb in

the search bar, a page should open showing the different mgb groups, click on

mgb post op, when it opens in the upper right hand corner there should be a

place to click on that says subscribe, I think when that opens you just fill

out info and send. I know a lot have said that Dr. R has to approve it, so it

could be a few days before you get conformation that you've been approved.

Hope this helps and if I have it wrong anyone, please jump in and correct me.

I hope you're still feeling well!!!

Flo,

It is so good to see you post again. I have been really down because I'm

about two months out and have only lost 30 lbs, not an ounce in the last two

weeks, and I have walked 14 miles just last week. Your posts just pick me

up. Thank you.

: I was afraid to eat too. I don't know what I thought would happen, but I

was afraid to eat. It takes time. Eventually you'll be hungry and you'll want to

Thanks Flo !

I was going to ask how to get on the post-op list. I think...nope..I KNOW

i've had more than I can take of this DrR Bashing ! I'm going to miss this

group...but until it goes back to the loving, supportive, wonderfully funny

group it used to be...I am afraid I will be leaving ..and going to the

MGB-Florida, and MGB-Post-Op list. If anyone ever needs me..please just

email me !

Hi Cary,

I know that all of this is overwhelming. I just started the process

myself end of Jan. Going through multiple consultations is not fun

and finding out that I have to have 2 surgeries totally got me down.

I also have an open bite and will be having a pallet expansion

(SARPE) and a segmented Laforte 1 procedure to move the back of my

lower jaw up and my part of my upper teeth a little higher as the

surgeon thought my current smile was a little too gummy. The SARPE

is being schedule for Sept. and I will have an expander put in (pre-

braces). I will wear the expander for about 2 months and then braces

for 1 - 1 1/2 years and then have the upper and possible lower

depending if they think my lower jaw will swing forward enough.

My orthodontist told me to take my time and think about all of this,

after all I did live with my mouth for 32 years, and it won't hurt to

take a few weeks to process through everything. My family and

friends are supportive, but don't really understand why I am doing

this because to them I look fine. Most people think its cosmetic or

plastic surgery. Funny how its not an issue of looks, but wanting to

bite food normally. Mainly for me I want my mouth to feel

comfortable. My husband asked me how much I want to do this and I

honestly answered more than anything. I want a normal bite and

smile. That helped reassure me I was making the right decision.

Does your orthodonist or oral surgeon have other patients who went

through similar procedures? Do they have any after pictures to

share? Anyone they can refer who would talk with you? My ortho had

a former patient who contacted me and we talked about the procedures

(her case was similar to mine). She was so happy with the result,

she insisted that her picture go up on the smile board for everyone

to see - so her picture was up there with all the younger kids.

I had braces before, so I was not keen on having to get them again

either. But I just keep thinking about how great it will be for my

teeth to touch and how better I will feel and look. Each day you go

forward think your one step closer to that end result and it will be

worth it.

And even if your doctors move quickly, remember that you have time to

think about everything. Good luck on your consultation.

Amy,

Thanks for all of your advice and it's nice to hear from people going

through the same things I am. Fortunately enough for me, I won't be

needing a palette expander as far as I know right now. My

orthodontist, whom I visit on July 12, will be explaining everything

she wants to do with me. She has been expediting everything so far

and would like to have the braces on me by the end of July.

I feel the same way you do though about esthetics as it's not an issue

of how it looks to me. Although, having my upper jaw match my lower

jaw when all is said and done will definitely a bonus. At 34 I've

been living with my jaw like this without thinking much about it.

It's amazing how the human body adapts to things such as that. But,

with all of the things I've been told and all the possible affects on

my teeth and health that could occur if I don't get this fixed, it

would be tough and silly not to do it now. To know now that I don't

have to live with a sore jaw, no place to keep my tongue behind my top

teeth, plus the simple fact of not being able to bite properly is

something I don't have to live with. Plus, if I don't do it, how could

I possibly tell my 4 year old son (who has inherited my jaw) that he

should get it done?

My orthodontist and oral surgeon have had many patients do this

procedure. They've both shown me before and after pictures with

outstanding results as far as I can see. I respect people who take

pride in their work and from what I've seen, both take an immense

amount of pride in what they have accomplished.

I hope we can keep in contact as we both go through this over the next

few years. It will be nice to share our experiences.

Take care and good luck.

Hi Cary,

I too have a 4 year old and she's got my high, narrow pallate too - I

don't know if she will have the same issues though, her teeth are

perfect right now. Orthodotics today are so much more advanced than

when we were kids. Did you know they recommend kids see an

orthodontist at age 8? I didn't see an orthodontist until I was 14

years old and of course my parents thought surgery was too risky. So

I had 4 teeth removed and braces, but my smile was never perfect

because my jaws never lined up correctly. I never thought much about

it until recently when I started having my teeth shift and noticed

that the open bite was more and more prominent. I don't have TMJ

symptoms that I notice, but they did notice wearing on my back

teeth. And it is annoying figuring out where to place your tongue -

lol- isn't that so strange, because normally you never think about it

until you are going to sleep or concious of it.

I am glad you found good doctors. My orthodontist really cares about

his patients and he's made time over lunch or after work for my

visits. He's also good about being available for questions. My oral

surgeon has done a lot of these surgeries, my ortho picked him

because of the numbers. The OS is nice, but because he is highly

recommended he is extremely busy. It makes it hard with questions,

so I am glad this site is here. I don't think of questions to ask

until well after the visit.

Lets definitely keep in touch through this process - I am sure we

will both need the support and good luck with your appointment on the

12th. (That's my birthday by the way - Happy 33!)

Amy,

I look at my 4 year old son and feel terrible that he has the bigger

lower jaw and smaller upper one as my genes were obviously passed down

to him. I sure hope he won't have to get surgery to correct his jaw.

My ortho said the same thing you did about bringing him in when he's

eight. I will definitely be doing that and I will not leave it as

long as I was left. I had never seen an orthodontist until last week.

No dentist I ever had thought it was necessary as my teeth are

straight. There is no doubt I felt awfully old there during my three

appointments so far.

In regards to my tongue, I just thought it was big. Now I think all

the time about where it is positioned. Although, I have always been

very careful about keeping my mouth closed. If I don't, my tongue

will hang out of my mouth as my jaw doesn't naturally stay closed.

My orthodontist, oral surgeon, and periodontist work together as a

team for patients like me. They only take on so many a year as

patients like us take a little more time than regular orthodontist

patients. I have a ton of questions I want to ask as well but usually

freeze up and forget to ask them during appointments.

Thank you for the thoughts and I hope all goes well as well on July

12. I'll let you know what happens as this is my last appointment

before the braces are put on. Plus, I'll be getting two bicuspids

removed over the next few weeks as well to make room on the top.

If you are interested and if you chat online at all, I'd love to chat

while we go through this experience together. Whatever messenger you

use, I have an ID, so whatever is convenient for you.

Have a great birthday on the 12th!

Cary

Relax about your fouryear old.

My dd lost two bottom molars and had a huge overbite (like I did) at

the time, I brought her six months to the ortho...thinking for sure

she won't have enough room for her adult teeth, they'd all crowd,

she'd need a bsso. Well she is 11 and not only are they all perfectly

straight, with enough room she probably won't even need braces!

Miracles happen!

And they can do much more when they are growing than when everything

is 'set'...Here I was thinking my dd would be headgear queen!
