Michele,

I searched and searched online to find somewhere that listed the label

ingredients for Steak-Ums, as I recall them being more than " just beef " , from

years ago.....

I did not find a company website, but did find two other recipe websites that

listed two different things as being listed ingredients for Steak-Ums. Maybe it

depends on what part of the country a person is in..... but anyway, here are the

two listings I found:

<< Ingredients....beef, water, beef extract, salt, natural flavor, modified food

starch >>

<<Ingredients: Beef, Natural Flavors Sodium: 30mg >>

If your package just says " beef " ....... and does not include the other things,

not evey the " natural flavors " , then okay. I would still feel funny about using

this product, personally.... but that's just me.

BUT, if it lists " natural flavors " , they are NOT legal..... because all kinds

of things, including sugars and starches (and MSG) can be hidden under that

labeling.

Do beware of any boxed, packaged, frozen meat products.... even plain chicken

breasts in the frozen section usually have additives that are

questionable/borderline legal.... if not flat-out illegal. We just don't want

you to use something that could possibly include something you don't realise is

there.

Re: Steak Ums in beginning

I'm new & am really going out of my mind right now, truly, so I'm

honestly just trying to understand.

Are absolutely *no* boxed meats alloewd, even if the ingredients are

just whatever meat it is?

Thanks, Michele

I know that some of the Applegate Farms products are legal, some aren't. You

have to read labels closely.... and then even if you are fairly confident that a

product is " okay " , and you choose to use it.... be sure to read the label EVERY

time you buy it. It has happened before that a company changes it's recipe.....

but the new labels don't get printed and the old ones are still used. (I'm

remembering when this happened with Shelton's hot dogs a few years ago.)

And ALWAYS be prepared to pull ANY pre-made product if your child does not make

the progress that you were hoping for. Sometimes, even a product that " checks

out " can be causing a problem.... and the only way to know for sure is to pull

it and see if things improve.

I think with the Steak-Ums, I would definitely try to contact the company and

get assurance in writing. We still can't declare something to be officially

legal.... but you can use it if you feel it's safe for your family.

Re: Steak Ums in beginning

Maybe that's a different product. The box I have is red &

says " Ingredients: Beef " . All I know is they're a little greasy, but

we drain them & the kids love them. They never tasted like anything

else was in there, but maybe I'll call the company if I can get the

chance.

While on the topic of pkgd meats, I have always used , Bell &

, & Applegate Farms for organic turkey, chicken, & beef

burgers. They all say just the meat as the ingredient (Applegate

Farms has them as GFCF on their website). Any experience with the

other two?

I've tasted those & they're very plain as well; doesn't taste like

they've added anything.

Thanks again,

Michele
