I had a hysterectomy and I have learned something that saved me. LOL I had a small pillow. I took it to the hospital with me. I held it over the incision whenever I sneezed, coughed, got up... you name it. It was my security. It helps to hold pressure on it. I was made fun of at home because I never went anywhere without my pillow. LOL You will be pretty much pain free in the hospital, at least I was. Then they discharged me without enough pain meds. I usually don't like any pain meds, but be sure you are covered. They had me doing deep breathing exercises for my lungs. They will be having me do the same thing for the valve replacement and i worry I won't want to take deep breaths because of the pain in the chest. I think to get well, we will do almost anything. I will put up with the pain if I know i will benefit after. LOL I don't know anything about coughing during surgery. Ask the guy who puts you out. (can never spell that word) LOL Knowy you are in my thoughts and prayers. keep us updated. hugs

I think the statistic for Aortic Insuffientency and Mitral Valve Prolaps with RP is 1.6 % so...... they are trying to figure it all out. Geez, we will sure have a sick ward in the group. Too many surgeries at the same time. We might want to start our own support group for recovery. LOL You take care and keep my posted. hugs Heidi's tips were great. I forgot all about those. Heidi's right, if you keep moving as much as you can, but not to over do, you will be feeling great in no time. Don't vacuume either!! LOL Experience taught me that. And no heavy lifting. Your doctor sounds wonderful. Remember when all drs. were older then us???? LOL What happened.??? These drs look like they are younger than my kids. LOL Have a quick recovery Connie. Guest guest
Hi Connie ,sorry about your up coming surgery. Here is my input from my own experience. I never heart of someone coughing during surgery. But ask the knock out Dr. about that. I am like cant spell his title. LOL Now after Surgery the will make you cough to clear your Lungs!!!! But please know the do give you a pillow to hold on your tummy. If you have one at home that you like take it with you. The more you walk right away and move around the better it will be for you even thru it might hurt a pit. Also DON " T hold your gas in. That will hurt like mmm you know what LOL yup you will have that. Don't matter who is in the room let it rip. Sorry don't know how else to say this. Now if the don't cut you open and do it the other way it will be a bit easier. Just remember walk and move around so you do NOT catch Pneumonia .Wishing you the very best and fasted recovery. Love you Heidi > I mostly worry about the cough, which I still have to some > degree...will I cough during surgery? Guest guest
Hi :-) Thanks for your good thoughts and for the pillow suggestion. I will put them to good use :-) Do you have a date for your surgery, yet? I heard something the other day about Helms....isn't he the senator who is in his 90's ? Well, he's again having an arotic valve replaced after having an artificial one for the last 10 years and from what I've heard, he's showing those doctors what determination can do for one's longevity. So you show them too, OK? I'll pop in sometime after my surgery. Guest guest
Oh, Heidi :-) I love your posts!!!! You bring such a smile to everyone's face :-) I'll be sure to let 'em rip LOL! no time to be a lady, right? You should see my doctor, Heidi......he's really cute! Wouldn't you know LOL Even the receptionist told me that " the doctor isn't too hard to look at " and she was right. He walked in and asked me why I was there for my appointment and I told him I had coughed out my uterus. He said, " I ~hate~ it when that happens. " LOL I'll spare you the details of the next part, but it has something to do with an exam while standing up!! Gotta have one's sense of humor, I guess. Unfortunately, I have to have the big deal surgery with cutting and all of that. So, I imagine it might be a while before I'm back to washing windows again....but I don't wash windows very often, so I'll be OK :-) You guys are such a neat group. I love you all, Connie
Guest guest
Thanks, :-) I'll keep moving....you guys have really helped to put a positive spin on all of this and now, I feel like I can do it!! Yes, these doctors are getting younger every day LOL I sure do remember when they were all older than me. It's not that we're getting older, though, right? LOL you take care, too Connie Heidi's right, if you keep moving as much as you > can, but not to over do, you will be feeling great in no time. Don't vacuume > either!! LOL Experience taught me that. Guest guest
Hi Connie, My surgery was postpone twice because of my coughing, I was then given a sedative or muscle relaxer for my hysterectomy. The stress made my cough worst.. ISA Female Surgery tips? (don't read if you're squeamish) Hi Everyone :-)I know some of you guys have had to undergo surgeries while dealing with RP and I hope to glean some of your experiences. I remember a discussion about the tracheal tubes that are used during surgeries (BTW, are they used for every surgery??) and some people suggested that we ask the doctor to use a smaller sized tube, like a pediatric one because it won't irritate the trachea as much. I have to have a hysterectomy on June 18....mostly because of my cough for the past 6 years, I've basically coughed my uterus out! (sorry guys, I know some people don't like to talk about these things...)I mostly worry about the cough, which I still have to some degree...will I cough during surgery? I imagine it will hurt like * & ^%^%^ & to cough after the surgery....will I be able to clear my lungs? Questions, questions....Looking forward to input on this one :-) Sending lots of hugs to everyone,Connie HDISCLAIMER!!WE ARE NOT MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS, THEREFORE ANY INFORMATION THAT IS RECEIVED HERE IS FROM EXPERIENCE ONLY. Guest guest
Hi Isa, How often were you coughing when they had to postpone your surgery, do you remember? I think I must cough maybe 5-10 times per day and it seems to be mostly triggered by eating (that was and is a main trigger), different odors/smells, and for reasons unknown. It used to be I coughed at least 50 times per day (really!) and it was more than I could count and the coughing fits would last several minutes at a time.....how else do you cough out your uterus? LOL So, all in all, it is much better but I still worry about a cough attack during surgery. I will ask about something to stop the cough during surgery. Thanks for your help, sending hugs your way, Connie H > Hi Connie, > My surgery was postpone twice because of my coughing, I was then given a sedative or muscle relaxer for my hysterectomy. Guest guest
Connie, I had a constant heavy cough in the morning it would be less frequent in the afternoon. I was worry I would have to use depends. After the surgery and recovery I was given a shot my cough did not stop, it was a mild less frequent cough, nothing that hurt the incision.
