I can't tell you for sure if our pediatric registered dietician has worked

with someone in this same situation. However, she is a " dan " dietician who

works in a " dan " pediatrician's office. She is knowledgable about scd, and

has trated only autistic children for about 8 yrs. now. She's awesome. She

does do phone consultations. If you'd like to call her office to see if she

thinks that she can help you, her info is below.

I hope she can help.

Please give us an idea of what foods she is currently eating. Is she getting

plenty of fruit? Starchier veggies like squash and green peas? Since she's been

on SCD for over a year, are you using various beans/legumes now?

Hypoglycemia on SCD in a 3 year old

My three year old daughter has been on the SCD diet for over a year.

Recently, she has had two episodes of serious ketotic hypoglycemia (39

and 36 blood glucose). The doctors are saying we need to put her on a

higher carbohydrate diet but the SCD diet has been really helpful for

her development. Does anyone have any experience with this and have

any suggestions including a nutritionist who has some experience with

hypoglycemia and SCD (we are in San Francisco but could do a phone

consultation), or any ideas of higher carbohydrate foods that are SCD

legal that we should try. Or things we could try that are not SCD

legal but not as bad as some? We are really at a loss for what to do.

The old ideas about hypoglycemia recommended starch.

However, there is new research that points to the fact that SCD might be a good

diet for hypoglycemia. I will try to send research articles to illustrate this.

HTH,Mimi

Please seek the guidance of a doctor before switching to proteins, they are so

many SCD legal carbs that might be helpful so you might not need to use protein.

Protein can help prevent hypoglycemia as well as carbs

You are the second person who has recommended her. I just called her

and she seems to have just the knowledge and experience that we are

looking for. Thanks for the recommendation.

Patti,

Red meat, summer and winter squash, broccoli, carrots, mango, pear,

kiwi and cashews. She doesn't eat peas because she had a slight

sensitivity to it due to testing we had done though we might be able

to add it back in now. We have not added in starchier veggies yet

because she has still had some symptoms. Maybe we should though given

the situation.

I'm glad she was helpful. Vikki and Dr. O'Hara are both incredible. I

can't tell you the improvements that we've seen in iel in the past 6

weeks since our first visit with them...not to mention scd over the past

four months.

I think you've got to weigh out the other symptoms with this low blood sugar.

I would add red lentils (they are the same as the green/brown lentils... but

they've been hulled, so are easier to digest). Try some of the other legal

beans, too.... be sure to prepare them as stated in the book, with the proper

soaking and cooking. Lentils do not need to be pre-soaked.

I would also consider feeding her more meals.... smaller meals, but more

frequently, throughout the day.

I honestly think she can get good carbs on SCD... but you just may need to

increase them legal ones and feed her more frequently. I am not well-versed on

hypoglycemia, but had a friend who once suffered from it. For her, it was

essential that she eat a bit of protein every few hours, along with other foods.

I don't honestly know how it all works, but I can't IMAGINE that one would

really HAVE to add grains back to get good carbohydrates in.

Fruits probably burn up pretty fast... but I think the legumes would really be a

good thing right now. If the " sensitivity " was only evidenced in tests, I would

certainly go by how she actually does in the real world and not worry about that

test result right now. Her gut has probably healed quite a lot by now.

Don't be afraid of the " starchier veggies " .... she NEEDS them now!
