Guest guest
I'm impressed that you are so up and about having had surgery such a short time ago. You must be very strong and healthy otherwise. You still have 60% of your panc, right. What part did they remove? It does make a difference when your looking at the exocrin and endocin frunctions of the pancreas. With your spleen being removed, I'm just guessing, did they give you the pneumonia vaccine along with some others? You still cant drink alcohol, I'm sure you already knew that. And you still have to watch for fat and take your vitamins. Its giong to take a little while for the pancreas to heal itself before you can see it on yourself and before it can start functioning. Are you on enzymes? Well if you are you should continue those, I think. Until you see the doc next time. I hope everything goes well for you and you heal quickly. Guest guest
(and I was just going to lurk-LOL!) OK, when you have your spleen (splenectomy) out you have to be vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia, and some docs recommend vaccinations against other types of bacteria (such as the ones that cause meningitis). The spleen is important in fighting bacteria. Without it you're at higher rish of getting nasty infections. You also have to contact your doctor in future pretty much every time you sneeze or run a fever at all to see if you need antibiotics. Its very important that your doctor explain to you how you need to keep an eye on even minor infections in future. If your doctor is not too up on this, you could see an infectious disease expert. Mine has been very helpful. Hope this makes sense! Guest guest
I was once advised to have a partial pancreatectomy and total spleenectomy. I asked about the spleen and was told by the surgeon. " Oh, you don't need it. " B.S.! I refused the surgery and I'm glad I did. Lots of these guys and gals are in a big hurry to cut you up - be cautious about these surgeries. They can affect your post-surgical life big-time. A pancreatectomy is not an easy surgery and it can lead to lots and lots of post-surgical complications.
