Guest guest
Hi and Carol! My twin boys also eat tons of eggs every day. (Well about four eggs or so) and a lot of carrots, butternut squash, acorn squash, and goat yogurt. How can you tell if eggs are an issue? Can they cause behavioral problems if eaten in too high of quantity? Dana Mom to and Garrett SCD 3 months, Celiac Disease jennifernormanly wrote: Oooo, Carol, I hope you are wrong about the eggs. I'd say he eats a total of 4 eggs per day, including those found in foods like the pumpkin pie filling (known as squash pudding in my house - he's got a puddin' thing). > > > > Wow Patti, thank you for taking the time to respond so thoroughly. > > I'll respond to each of your thoughts: > > > jennifer, > I am far from being as expert as patti but what I am seeing are two things: > > a ton of supplements > a lot of eggs. > > Carol F. > SCD 6 years > --------------------------------- All-new Yahoo! Guest guest
I have to stress again.... that I would pull the mag sulfate immediately. Yes, magnesium is calming to the central nervous system... but I just don't understand the use of this particular form, when you have a kid with loose BMs. Maybe they know something I don't... but I would only use this form topically. Now, I know many parents here are trying to do many things at once... following their DAN doctor's advice, taking all the supplements and remedies. But, I personally (this is just my opinion) feel that this can OFTEN get in the way of working out the bumps in the diet at the beginning. I have recommended many, many times to consider pulling ALL the supps until you get the diet well under way and things settle down. Then, add them back one at a time.... slowly. (Your Spectrum-Complete is the hypo-allergenic one....right? Without the xylitol, etc.?...just checking.) I feel the same way about homeopathics or anything else you're using. The kids will have a better chance of settling into the diet .... and YOU will be able to see what is causing what. In Jack's case, I think I would even stop the acidophilus for a bit.... just so you can see if he improves behaviorally when you take it back out. I KNOW the DAN docs think the kids need ALL of this stuff dumped down their throats all at the same time.... like a full-tilt assault on everything, with all the guns in the arsenal firing away. I just ask you to use your common sense and look at this diet as a critical FOUNDATION for everything else... and that you REALLY want to get this right before adding the other good stuff in. That's just me, maybe.... but I think there is potential danger in overkill. I don't want to see you give up on SCD, thinking you just couldn't get past this beginning part. So..... now, a couple more things.... You gave him cow cheese and yogurt... and poops were better. More well-formed. What about behavior? Did you see anything negative that you can attribute to the cow dairy? Or did you just get scared and thought you *shouldn't* be giving it to him? I can understand wanting to go with the safety of goat first... but was just curious if you actually saw anything bad from the cow. One way to test whether the goat DAIRY causes him any trouble would be to make a batch of goat yogurt.... that you KNOW fermented properly, for the full 24 hrs.... and then use it in something that you cook. That way, you know that any reaction you see will not be from the live culture (b/c it will all be killed by cooking), but from the SCD goat dairy (with it's denatured casein) itself. If no obvious bad reaction, then I would go ahead and start giving the live yogurt... in small quantities, working up gradually. Then try goat cheeses. One thing that jumps out at me from the list of foods... you wrote that you use: <<crushed red pepper, crushed fennel seed, thyme, gound bay leaves, >> in the Italian sausage that you make. I personally think it is TOO SOON to be using these... this early in the diet, and with a kid who is having diarrhea or loose BMs. You're going to need to scale back (I believe) to simpler spices/flavorings. Honestly, if my daughter has a " bad patch " and we see BMs going looser again, I pull out even things like cinnamon and cloves.... even ground pepper. Go with SIMPLE and BLAND at this point, to the extent you can get away with it and still get him to eat. You can bundle those herbs up (in a cheesecloth... whole bay leaves, garlic cloves, sprigs of fresh thyme, peppercorns, etc.) and cook the meat WITH these things and still get the flavors... then pull them out and toss them. I think you have to picture the possibly new, tender, raw tissue in the lining of his gut.... and that you don't want to assault and irritate it! Especially the crushed fennel seed.... it's just too soon! One of our old moderators has read your posts, ... and responded to me privately, and I'm waiting for some information from her.... which I'll then post or send to you. Some new ideas for you that possibly relate to why the acidophilus *may* be triggering some of the stuff you're seeing. Let me get back to you with that. Oh.... and I don't see a problem with the amount of eggs, if you're not going over 3-4 a day. Guest guest
, You wrote: <<Also, I meant to say magnesium citrate, not sulfate. I apologize for the confusion.>> Oh, good! WHEW! I was kind of concerned there! Magnesium citrate *can* cause loose poops, though (and I believe says it can feed yeast?) .... so switching to another form... maybe the glycinate or aspartate... will help there. <<Your advise about too many supplements is well received. I'm going to give this much thought.>> Yeah... you know, just for a few weeks. It would remove some variables. Adding them slowly back, one at a time. <<And, yes, the Spectrum Complete is hypo-allergenic.>> Good. <<Also, I'm going to read the article you sent, and pass it along to Jack's nutritionist ( Dorfman - just awesome) and doctor.>> There will be more information about that posted on the list very soon. Keep watching! I know of ... I've heard so many good things about her from other parents. Patti
