Guest guest
Hi all, If anyone has any experience with neurontin for pain relief I'd appreciate any info on the subject, pro and con. My doctor brought it up but I don't have any personal experience with it. Thanks for any info, Amy

Amy, My pain management doctor started me on 300 mgs. of Neurontin three months ago. I also wear a 75 mg. duragesic patch continually, changing that every 48 hours, and use Oxycodone 10 mg. - 3 times daily if needed for breakthrough. I believe the Neurontin has been very helpful for the reduction of the pain cycles I was experiencing. I'd been wearing a duragesic patch for over a year and been using some kind of short acting narcotic (Percocet, Morphine, Oxycontin IR or Oxycodone) for this long also. It wasn't until the Neurontin was introduced that I noticed the most decrease. I began by taking one 300 mg. tablet each night, but because of it's success with me, the doctor has now increased the dosage to three tablets, totaling 900 mg. a day (every 8 hours). I feel that in conjunction with the other meds, it helps tremendously. My doctor and I are aware that there have been incidences of pancreatitis while using this medication. Since I already HAVE pancreatitis, I figured it was worth a try to see if it worked, planning to stop if I noticed any unusual increases in pain. I have not had any problems with this since I started. You must remember that each individual is different, as well as their reactions to medications. I can only advise you to do what you feel is best for you. YMMV. Think good thoughts, Heidi Heidi H. Griffeth South Carolina SC & SE Regional Rep. Guest guest
Hi Amy, I have been takong Neurontin (600mg) 3 times a day for the past 4 years. I can't tell you how effective it has been as I only recently started to get pain relief due to a change in my pain meds. Generally, Neurontin is prescibed for seizures but are supposed to work alos for pain when in conjunction with narcotic pain meds such as Oxycontin and MS Contin. Sorry I can't be more helpful than this but I seriously doubt that the medication is effective in my case. Guest guest
Amy, I was on Neurontin for about 2 years. My experience was good and bad. Initially, I thought the med gave the decrease in anxiety that is associated with pain. I feel a sense of calmness that I had not had since I have the pancreatitis pain. But, then they increase the dose higher and higher. I was sleeping all the time. I could not stay awake at all, Then they put me on that med (Protonix) that is use to increase your alertness. Well, what a circus!! I also gained allot of weigh on the Neurontin, which is a said affect they do not tell you about. (Like 25-30 pounds) The weight gain was okay, but someone 5'3 " does not need to gain that amount. The weight came off once I stopped the med. They changed me to Topamax a drug similar to Neurontin, but doses not tend to cause the sleepiness. I slowly tapered off the Neurontin and started the Topamax, but them started to have a side affect like those that people get that can not take Compazine. The muscle jerking, slurred speech etc. (dystonia) So, I stopped taking them both. I do not recommend Neurontin. I think these physician do not want to give patient the pain meds they need. The paysicians' feel better giving you something other than narcotics, so the prescribe drugs like Neurontin. (which is intended to be used for seizure prevention). It is my opinion the those physician should take the drug for a while and see how it help them. Then they would not be so eager to give it to their patients!! You are smart to ask other about their experience before trying the drug!! If, you want to sleep your life ways it will let you do that!! Take care, gail Amy wrote: > Hi all, > If anyone has any experience with neurontin for pain relief I'd > appreciate any info on the subject, pro and con.
