Guest guest
Do you make your child wear a mask when she goes outside? There are probably far worse things she could inhale outside than what she would get from clothes & such. There are germs and industrial chemicals and all kinds of stuff in the air. All we can do is try to avoid immediate dangers to our children. It will be ok. As your children grow up and make some of their own decisions about where they go and what they do, I am sure at some point they may want to go to a dance club or someplace that allows smoking. However, maybe by that time they will have outlawed smoking in public period. Wouldn't that be great!!! Tina W., mother of Steph, 18yo wcf Family members smoking I had a question for the group. My mother-in-law and brother-in-law both smoke. They only smoke outside at their house, so my daughter doesn't get any second hand smoke, but I am sure there is plenty of smoke particles on the carpet, couch, clothes, etc. I am very concerned about this, and am considering not letting my daughter visit her grandmother/uncle. What are your opinions on this- am I out of line? And, can anyone refer me some links to articles that may mention the danger of even the smoke particles to kids with CF? I'd like to have some medical reference material handy because I am sure there will be some arguments if I try to keep her from visiting. Guest guest
Thanks Tina. I guess maybe I'm being a bit over-paranoid. Although here in CO we are getting close to having smoking illegal in all public places- it already is in Boulder! Elias Family members smoking I had a question for the group. Guest guest
I am an x-smoker, but I think that it should be outlawed in public. We have to protect our children as much as possible. They have to stay well so when there is a cure they are ready. BUT REMEMBER THEY STILL NEED TO BE CHILDREN. That's the hard part not to be a helicopter parent(that's what my sister-in-law calls it when you hover overhead and don't let them do anything without you seeing what they are doing). It will all work out ok. Tina W. Family members smoking I had a question for the group. My mother-in-law and brother-in-law both smoke. Guest guest
Tina, I already tried to make this same point a few days ago...it wasnt a big hit, which i tried to jokingly bring up in my " round 2 " post, which never came through. Its really hard not to become fanatical when a child has an illness; as we all know, a rose by any other name is still a rose.I think its better to have it banned in public too, even though i smoke. Its better for everyone, but of course i'll continue to smoke until then.If they make it so difficult to smoke more of us will quit.Because i hate the taste of cigarettes outside, especially if its cold, my carton lasts about 2 wks or so.Thats a LONG time for 10 packs.(AND i only smoke 1/2 a cigaarette, i dont like the taste after it gets too low.)Sorry i'm babbling again. Anyways, I hope some are more receptive to your opinion :) Love all of you whether you've agreed with me or not :) Patty > I am an x-smoker, but I think that it should be outlawed in public. Guest guest
Elias, There are definitely particles left behind after someone smokes. If you do nothing else insist on serious hand washing and no kisses after a smoke. If they smoke in the house, then yup there are particles in the air, on the furniture and in the rugs. I don't have a link but if you go back a few pages on the site, you will find a plethora of info and comments under the subject " blowing off steam " or something close to that. Guest guest
Elias, Remember you are fighting for you childs health. I too came upon this situation when our son was diagnosed with cf, thankfully my mother quit smoking. Other family members that smoked and didnt want to give it up were told that there was no smoking in our home and the choice was theirs to make. I found out quickly who found their cigarettes more important then their grandson, nephew or cousins health. I decided my sons health was more important then the persons feelings who couldnt or wouldnt give up that nasty habit. I was told when I was younger that my mother couldnt give up cigarettes because she was ADDICTED to them, well when my sons health came into play she gave them up and has never looked back, so it is a choice and the person that smokes has to make a choice. Tell them the way it is and let THEM make the choice. I know I cant keep my son who is now away at college free from all the bad things that can harm him, but the things I could do and the things I can now do I will always make the effort and I have taught him that the choices he makes whether it be going to bars where there is alot of smoke or being around people who smoke the choice is now his. Make sure your child feels that they can speak up and tell people that they can not be around smoke and dont ever make them feel bad for speaking up for their health. I know my son has on many occassions told people to not smoke around him and when pressed as to why, when he tells them he has a serious lung disease they are embarassed and will leave the area or stop smoking. I wish you the best and know that we are always here to support you. > >Reply-To: cfparents >To: <cfparents > >Subject: Family members smoking >Date: Wed, 31 Dec 2003 12:59:49 -0700 >MIME-Version: 1.0 >X-Sender: ecobb@... >Received: from n11.grp.scd.yahoo.com ([66.218.66.66]) by >mc10-f21.hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(5.0.2195.6713); Wed, 31 Dec >2003 12:00:10 -0800 >Received: from [66.218.66.158] by n11.grp.scd.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 31 Dec >2003 19:59:57 -0000 >Received: (qmail 72169 invoked from network); 31 Dec 2003 19:59:53 -0000 >Received: from unknown (66.218.66.172) by m18.grp.scd.yahoo.com with QMQP; >31 Dec 2003 19:59:52 -0000 >Received: from unknown (HELO acgmail1.den.acgii.com) (63.229.234.234) by >mta4.grp.scd.yahoo.com with SMTP; 31 Dec 2003 19:59:51 -0000 >X-Message-Info: JGTYoYF78jHwEuDVfqlo2gFQsPl3AAFQ >X-eGroups-Return: >sentto-104900-54906-1072900796-clog1760=msn.com@... >X-Apparently-To: cfparents >content-class: urn:content-classes:message >X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft Exchange V6.0.6487.1 >Message-ID: >X-MS-Has-Attach: X-MS-TNEF-Correlator: Thread-Topic: Family members smoking >Thread-Index: AcPP2KTZQTb+QfXUT7aYvorA8NjyKg== >X-eGroups-Remote-IP: 63.229.234.234 >X-Yahoo-Profile: ecobb_alumni >Mailing-List: list cfparents ; contact >cfparents-owner >Delivered-To: mailing list cfparents >Precedence: bulk >List-Unsubscribe: <mailto:cfparents-unsubscribe > >Return-Path: >sentto-104900-54906-1072900796-clog1760=msn.com@... >X-OriginalArrivalTime: 31 Dec 2003 20:00:10.0243 (UTC) >FILETIME=[b1FB5530:01C3CFD8] > >I had a question for the group. Guest guest
I would be so crushed if I could not have Abby stay over night with me. She is my reward for raising Toni (my duaghter). I would rip out all of my carpet and repaint the walls, if that's what it took to have her here. I don't smoke, but I have two little dogs. I am sure that your mother-in-law will work with you to make you comfortable. I wonder if shampoong the carpet and washing the walls would take care of the particles???
