Guest guest
Hi again. I'm trying to stay positive about things, but am feeling like things are going so slowly. I know that healing takes a lot of time and I'm in for the long haul (the whole, " it's a marathon, not a race. " ) However, I'm hoping to get a little perspective to feel like we're on the right track. has been 100% SCD since the beginning of July. He is eating the following foods: broiled beef patty, veggie meatballs, eggs, veggie pancakes, boiled chicken, avocado, goat yogurt (very small amounts), farmer's cheese, grape jello, grape juice, oj (all juices diluted), cinnamin, vanilla, honey, ketchup these are all cooked, deseeded, and pureed - butternut squash, summer squash, zucchini, apple sauce, pear sauce, green beans We've tried the following with no success: bananas, whole green beans, carrots (even pureed), larger amounts of goat yogurt (nothing more than 2 TBL), peaches, steamed pears/apples, nut flour I feel like he's been eating the same things forever and that we aren't getting anywhere with new foods. Does this seem right for 4 months in? Or should we be seeing more progress/variety of food? Now I will say that when he is eating the basic " successful " foods we get pretty consistent " trophy " poops (sorry so gross.)I guess I'm in need of either reassurance or advice to point us to what to try next. Thanks! Leah - mom of 3 1/2 ASD
Guest guest
Leah, I've got to go to bed early tonight... but will get back to this in the morning. But, for now.... so, he tolerates appleSAUCE and pearSAUCE, but if you just do cooked (steamed) apples or pears, his trophy poops turn to mush? I wasn't sure what you mean by having tried those foods " without success " . I will reply longer tomorrow. It may take some back and forth to figure it out. Patti some perspective please Hi again. Yes, exactly. Maybe I didn't steam them long enough? > I wasn't sure what you mean by having tried those foods " without success " . I will reply longer tomorrow. It may take some back and forth to figure it out. Without success meant that his poop turned mushy again. Luckily, his poop has been a pretty good barameter of foods that are/aren't working...we have much less success with gadging behaviors because he's pretty mild mannered. Thanks for being there Patti. Guest guest
Hmmmm..... well, yes, it could be that they weren't cooked " enough " for him at this point. And/or that he's not chewing these foods enough, so they're going down the hatch in chunks... and his gut just isn't prepared to break things down that much just yet. I do think you've got to go by the individual child.... and his " barometer " will tell you what he can handle. Frustrating, I know. I think you're doing an amazing job.... as the variety of foods he DOES eat successfully now is really pretty good, compared to some other SCD kids. I would have to say that with ANY new food you want to try, be sure it's well-cooked.... AND pureed first.... and just try a TINY amount to test. Hang in there.... you're doing a great job so far. It may be another few months... I know, that's not what you wanted to hear maybe, but prepare yourself for plugging away at this, pretty much as you are, until after the winter holidays are past. Have you ever tried enzymes with him? If not, maybe it's something you could consider before long. I have a feeling that by early next spring, you'll have a different story to tell.
