Guest guest
, You've got the right idea with mixing the cooked carrots into the hamburger patty. You can do the same thing with green beans or spinach which are also in the stage one veggie category. There's a zucchini casserole recipe in BTVC that is very good. Take a look, and see if you think he'd try it. Personally, I'd also put just a couple of carrots, green beans, or whatever you mix into his meat on the plate. He might surprise you one day, and try a taste. You can also mix in some veggie with finely chopped chicken, add the homemade mayo, and make chicken nuggets. You can mix pureed veggies into almost any ground meat, and they'll never know unless you put in too much. I know that some kids are quite the detective, so you might have to start with just the tiniest amount of veggie in the meat, and work your way up from there. I'm thrilled for you guys with the progress you've been seeing. Meleah Day 3 of Diet....First Formed Stool in 2 years!!!!! Hi Everyone - Wanted to share some great news! Last night, Ben had his first formed stool in two years! We couldn't believe it...it actually looked normal, and my husband saw him doing it too. Ben looked like he didn't know what was going on, like " wow, what's going on? This isn't supposed to be so difficult! " LOL! We were so happy that I wanted to frame it (sorry so graphic, but we are elated!) ;-)))) He has also been so mellow and great behavior, that it is difficult to think this is the same child living here! He has also had a great appetite, although he wouldn't eat the homemade applesauce I made this morning! And it was GOOD too! Darn! I am starting him on the Stage 1 today, with the applesauce this morning. He is only drinking though this morning 1/2 cider and 1/2 water. Seems ok with that, although a little cranky as I'm sure he is hungry! I cooked some carrots, and will attempt to mix some of those into his hamburger patty at lunch. Any other suggestions for creative ideas for Stage 1? Also, how long do you typically wait until going to Stage 1 with the nut butters? Atleast then I can start with some " bread type " things that will make him *happy*! We are keeping fingers crossed at good times ahead..... ;-))) THIS could be the exact thing Ben has needed all along. ;-) Thanks much - ;-)))))

Guest guest
Thanks so much for the feedback! I really appreciate the cooking tips too. Well......Ugggghhhh! I guess though I spoke too soon (as usual with progress with Ben it seems). He was doing sooooo well until after lunch. I had put carrots, not pureed, but mashed (our blender is in route from Boulder...gets here tomorrow) and he couldn't get enough of the hamburgers! Between him and his little sister (much smaller amount), they ate 1lb of ground beef! I saw that the intro diet said " no limits " , but what about for protein amounts? Anyway, about 30min-1hr after he ate, he started fussing, then pitching a fit to go up for his nap. Started obsessing about his plastic " DVD's " (carries them around with him). After we finally got him upstairs, he started screaming this high pitched scream (like you stepped on a cat!) and went absolutely nuts, kicking me, hitting, etc! I tried a bunch of things, including the charcoal (but couldn't get him to drink anything). Sooooo, was it the carrots (only new thing he ate today)? Or has die- off kicked in suddenly? One small stool was still formed before his nap. Ugh, he was doing sooooo well too! He turned into devil boy just like " that " . I have a hard time believeing that it was just a tanturm b/c I took his DVD away for his nap. Did the same thing last night, and didn't see THIS! He was fine with it on his past two " good " days. Any thoughts here? What should I do next? > > <<We were so happy that I wanted to > frame it (sorry so graphic, but we are elated!) ;-))))>> > > > That's why we call them TROPHIES around here! > > > Patti > > >

Guest guest
, I don't think this is just nothing either. I'd agree that it sounds like either die off or intolerance of the carrots, but I'm going to leave this to Patty, Carol, Mimi, somebody else who has more experience. Guest guest
Hi ! My boys have been on the diet for almost six months and still do not tolerate carrots unless they are pureed. Even then, I wonder if they digest them well. I think, for some, carrots are harder to digest and if it doesn't digest properly, it can make them feel unwell and show up in behavior. You might want to try pureed acorn squash or butternut squash instead or make sure to peel the carrots before cooking them and also puree. Guest guest
Well, maybe I will hold off on carrots for a bit. I did buy a butternut AND acron squash just yestreday at whole foods, so I might try that next. I also got some organic spinach too, so maybe that would work in the ground meat burgers too. Do you use a blender for the puree, and then do you add water too? If this is some die-off starting, about how long will it last? A few days? Longer? So, is this the " first " die-off that everyone talks about on the diet? Do you use the activated charcoal to help with this? His DAN doc had already given him a bottle....Good n' Natural Charcoal Capsules (activated) 260mg. Does anyone know if this brand is legal for the SCD? Any other suggestions for getting him through this? Do I need to alter what I am feeding him during this period, or continue with Stage 1? Also, how long until I can introduce Stage 2, aka nut butters? Thanks - ;-) > > Hi ! > > My boys have been on the diet for almost six months and still do not tolerate carrots unless they are pureed. Guest guest
Does your bottle of activated charcoal list " additional " ingredients? Just double check that for any illegals (the list on pecanbread.com under " supplements " will give you the most common illegal supp additives). It sure sounds like die-off to me.... and don't be alarmed if you see ups and downs along the way. The general trend should be moving upward soon, but as the bad guys finally give up the ghost, they excrete ALL the toxins they have left to give. Some will hang on longer.... many months, possibly.... and that's why some kids will go through additional die-off periods on down the road. Guest guest
I agree about the carrots . I have heard too many reports about kids and adults not tolerating them. I believe that the carrots today are different from the carrots that existed in the days of Dr Haas. The very soft carrots that are thin and have green on top of them might be a bit better.
