A better choice would be soy crisps, at least these have protein in addition

to carbs. You can find Genisoy Soy Crisps at Safeway, GNC, on the web, or

Trader Joe's has their own brand.

I used to absolutely o.d. on Triscuits, till I found out they're loaded with

trans-fats. I know we generally don't have to worry about fats as much as the

non- " fixed " population, but trans-fats are not good nohow.

My all-time favorite salty 'n crunchy is a Triscuit or something like it.

It's made with *actual* whole wheat, not some wheat flour or something.

Whole wheat makes it a complex carb and it doesn't break down quickly like a

white cracker or potato chip or something.

Popcorn and rice cakes are plain old carbs, tasty as they may be, low-fat as

they may be. Not the health food they purport to be. I think we have to

watch out more for carbs than fats.

I practically live on triscuits and cheese. I don't worry too much about the

fats, since it seems my body just flat doesn't process fats at all.

You know, I lived on Quaker Rice Cakes (I only liked the white cheddar) for

many years. It didn't seem to hurt me. But then, I was chasing bad guys

(often on foot) and taking care of 20 horses. LOL. I guess I was just

burning them off as fast as I ate them. This was long before I joined this

list, and I'm such an " oldie " that no one ever told me to stay away from

carbs before I joined this list. The only things I knew to stay away from

was sugar and fried foods. Both made me dump. I don't crave sugars, hardly

ever drink a soda or eat a candy bar, and chocolate is a now and then thing.

One of those Hershey's miniatures satisfies me, and only if it is dark

chocolate. I must be a real oddball. What I crave is green veggies. And I

don't deny that craving. I don't eat the Quaker corn/rice cakes anymore. Not

because of what anyone told me. It's just that habit passed. I don't really

have a habit now, unless it is the triscuits and cheese, and I don't eat

that every day. I have to make myself remember to eat, especially under

stress, or when I'm really busy. I must be getting calories somewhere. I

barrel right along at 145-150 (your weight can vary as much as 5 lbs a day,

at any given time). I just can't tell you where I'm getting them. I don't do

protein shakes, and I usually forget to take vitamins. It must be the

veggies. I MUST have some every day, or I go into DTs over it. Goodness, I

REALLY feel like an oddball now.

I'm guessing you're craving the greens because you have calcium issues?

Ya think?

How many? 1-2 per day? 1-2 per hour? If you say 1- 2 per day. I'd say sure,

if you count it as a meal not in addition to a meal. I'm not carbophobic,

only sugar-phobic, personally.

Amen! I don't seem to have a problem with fats. Cholesterol is fine and

weight is fine. And elbows still get dry! But, I do have a problem when I

start high-carbing. I love the whole-wheat crackers. There are others in

certain stores like Whole Foods, etc, but harder to find. I keep things

like hummus, tuna salad, pimiento cheese to slather on them. The dog likes

'em too.

They're a cracker/chip that looks like a mini rice cracker; they come in several

flavors and they have protein, so it's not like eating regular chips or

crackers. Do a google search for Genisoy and you should be able to find them

online.

  • 2 years later...

It sounds like you are seeing some really positive changes. Let him be the

guide.... if you think he seems to need a snack in the evening, go ahead... with

something legal and tolerable, of course.

The " bit of mucous " is probably related to yeast or bacteria that have died and

are " passing on " (literally).

Keep up the good work.
