Hi all - We just started this SCD diet about 2 weeks ago, and we are

seeing my 3yr old son recover right before our eyes! It is

unbelievable! We just switched DAN doctors, and he started on Nystatin

at the same time. I am talking HUGE changes in behavior, verbal

communication, and really " there " . We have really only noticed

regression behaviors when it's time to up the nystatin dosage, and that

seems to be only temporary. He comes out of it even farther ahead each

time. We are so excited. We did the more holistic " immune system

recovery " route for a year, with little to no success, so we agreed to

the nystatin (the diet was my idea), and what a change!!! ;-)

So, I guess we haven't been doing the diet 100% as I wasn't clear on a

few things like the hotdogs and deli meats. He has been getting

Applegate Farms hotdogs & meats, like almost every day, since that is

one of the main meats he will actually eat (due to texture issues), and

he HAS to eat to take the nystatin. Is Applegate Farms legal? If not,

are there hotdogs and meats that are that might also be gfcf? Oh, I

just now see the carrageenan in the packaged AF meats, but I don't see

it in the hotdogs. Is organic pear juice legal, or other juices that

don't list any other ingredients except the fruit itself?

So frustrating, as my son has TONS of food allergies, so we are already

WAY limited on his diet as it is. Any help is really appreciated!

Also, even though the behavior and communication is SOOOOO much better,

his stools are still horrible, and I do see the nuts, etc in there from

the flours. Is that normal? Will they get better off the illegal foods

that I guess we still have in there? Our DAN doc said die off stools

are horrible, and to be expected from the nystatin. Anyone else get

this too? His fanny was sooo raw tonight from three bad stools today....

Thanks -

Anne

Anne,

Congratulations! This is wonderful to hear.

Some Applegate Farms products are technically legal, some are not... you have

to read each and every label. I am leary enough of potential problems with these

that I just don't recommend them at all. It's up to you.

<<and he HAS to eat to take the nystatin.>>

You can get the nystatin made up without anything added, then mix it into

applesauce or some other food.... or drink. I personally don't have experience

with doing this, but I know others have.

<<Is organic pear juice legal, or other juices that

No.... there is no legal commercial pear juice. There is something about what

happens with the processing of both apple and pear juice, in the commercial

manufacturing, that makes it illegal for SCD.

You can make your own pear juice at home with a juicer.... and just dilute it,

as with any juice. If you don't have a juicer, if you just steam some pears with

a regular steamer basket that fits into a pan.... using just an inch of water

in the bottom.... then SAVE that water once the pears are steamed, you'll find

it is SUPER sweet, and that you basically have " pear juice " that is legal. You

may need to dilute that a bit, too.

All of the Knudsen " Just Juice " line juices are legal.... but their pear juice

is not included in that. I give my daughter SCD honey-lemonade.... just a

squeeze of fresh lemon juice in a glass of water, sweetened with a teaspoon of

honey. Use saccharin if he can't tolerate honey.

<<Also, even though the behavior and communication is SOOOOO much better,

Yes, some of that may be die-off.... hard to know if it's being caused by the

diet or the Nystatin, since you started both about the same time.

If his stools are " horrible " at this point, I think I personally would pull back

on the nut flour baked goods..... and maybe subsitute nut BUTTERS instead.

Just a smoother texture and easier on the gut.
