Re: SOD vs Panc Pain??-

I responded to this the other day but can't remember what the title was

so let me see if I can do it again.

I suffer from both SOD and CP. Right now I am having a small

(hopefully) pancreatic attack. I helped my husband lay stones for our

porch, worked the wheelbarrow, shoveled lifted 60 pound bags, etc. and

then went out for a meal and had Dairy Queen afterward. Am on Percocet

and hopefully it will stop here. My fault. Shame on me!

If I don't remember all the symptoms, someone else will help I am sure.

Basically the SOD pain is in the back. Kinda like GB pain . Right

shoulder blade pain. Hurts like crazy and laying down is NOT an

option. I need to rock back and forth like when having a pancreatic

attack. I find it hard to breath like someone is squeezing me only in

my back area, I have back pain....upper... and for whatever reason, I

try to burp like that has something to do with it or will fix the

pain!!! Of course that does nothing. But my body is screaming to me to

try anything to make the pain go away. I feel a shooting pain come from

my right shoulder, go to my right side of my neck and shoot straight out

from the right underside of my jaw. To me I see a lightning bolt figure

when feeling this. There is no pain in the front like with the

pancreas. The attack can last a few minutes or a few hours and can be

light or very severe. I haven't found anything to take care of the pain

except darvocet and percocet. The pain can appear to go away but within

minutes of trying to lay back, it is back and I have to sit upright

again to get any relief.

I know the symptoms sound quite like when I have a pancreatic attack,

except for the frontal pain. I used to not be able to tell the

difference because the 2 always came hand in hand. But I can tell the

difference now. And truth be told, I will take a SOD attack over a

Pancreatic any day of the week!

Hope this helps in some way,

Thanks Sandy that was helpful to me. I do get both kinds of pain

then....sometimes at the same time, sometimes not. I just assumed

that it was all panc pain. Is this a medically known fact? That

the pain in the back is from SOD and in the front from just the

panc? I never knew this before.....hmmmmm

At any rate, thanks Sandy...see I learn something about this illness

every day!!

While SOD pain is in the back, so is pancreatitis pain. For example, I DON'T

have SOD, but I do get tremendous mid and upper back pain, with the upper

pain usually always on the left side. I've got Chronic Pancreatitis, but not

SOD. One of the known medical symptoms of CP pain is pain that radiates to

the back. When I have a really bad attack, the back pain can become more

disturbing than the abdominal pain.

After talking with two friends who have SOD, (Lily and Kaye), they have

always described the SOD pain as VERY sudden and of such fierce intensity

that it feels like a heart attack and knocks you right off your feet. Lily has

spoken of a burning sensation in her sternum where she feels the urge to

burp.

Whereas, with CP pain, it doesn't happen that quickly. With me it kind of

sneaks up on me slowly and intensifies over a longer period of time. I can

sense a CP attack building up, but there's no warning with the SOD attack, it's

very abrupt.

As I said, the SOD explanation isn't by personal experience, it's what others

have explained to me. Hope this helps.

With love, hope and prayers,
