Guest guest
> > Hi guys, > > It has been a while since I posted. I hope everyone is doing well. We needed your humble opinion. We have been eating SCD now for 6 and a half months. As most of you know we are practicing SCD by the book and with " fanatical adherence " and having wonderful success as a family. Needless to say, last week, we introduced candy with nuts to our 2 year old (Kiki) and I wish we had not. This interesting b/c if I take plain nuts and add a little honey and eat that as a quick treat, I immediately feel peculiar. If I combine the nuts and honey in a dish of yogurt I don't. SCD provides recipes for baked goods and desserts and calorie dense foods. That does not mean we do not have the option of taking it easy with them just as someone not on the SCD diet can do. Weight is always a concern for me since I lost 86 pounds just before going on SCD. SCD maintains me at the same weight... unless I start overdoing the goodies. Focus on meat, fish, poultry, fruits, vegetables good dairy, moderate honey and just have small amounts of nuts as a snack. Kiki doesn't need candy very often if at all. She is just a toddler and can be guided into good lifetime eating habits. maybe limit a piece of an SCD confection to special occasions, company etc. I have told you before, I am not cured of celiac entirely after six years, but I am very well controlled and can have occasional non SCD items and accept this with satisfaction as a diabetic would accept lifetime monitoring. Guest guest
Dearest Carol, You said: " This interesting b/c if I take plain nuts and add a little honey and eat that as a quick treat, I immediately feel peculiar. If I combine the nuts and honey in a dish of yogurt I don't. " We thank you for your prompt reply. It was helpful. We find our selves in a bit of denial about this entire " celiac " healing thing. We use to beleive that this could be " cured " ...but it is becoming obvious that like you we are going to be eating SCD for life. It is a good thing that there are so many wonderful foods to eat! You are also very right about the candy issues. It is just difficult living in a world that revolves aorund goodies. The kids see that they are very different now. We thought we would try to be more " typical " , but the life style of the SADiet, is obviously not going to be our life style now. So candy is out for our little Kiki, unless we want to play with fire! I even became a bit gassy. So maybe it's the honey after all! Because like you, I can eat nuts with no ill affect...but add them to candy and I " ferment " ....and it LOOKS LIKE IT spells DISASTER for our little Kiki. Do any of you think it is feeding some of the layers of " bad gut bugs " still??? I have been told that Eliane thought the junk may grow in layers and die off in layers! If so, how do you kill them for good? Or can we ever kill em for good???? Or do we have them for life and just keep the little buggers numbers down by not feeding them excess sweets that we are not able to absorbe immediately? God Bless you for helping us all. You are a God send. Antoinette and (celiac) parents to three silly yaks! SCD 2/
Guest guest
Hi Antoinette, > It has been a while since I posted. I assumed that since we all where doing so well that it was going to be OK and she was ready. She truly enjoyed this treat. The book says six months. But our experiment blew up in our face. > This candy nut roll, caused her a set back and a flare of " celiac " like diarrhea and much pain. I still do not know if it was the boiled HONEY (to make the candy) or the NUTS in the stuff?? Does she normally eat that amount of honey? Does she have yeast issues? Has she had whole/pices of nuts before? Did she eat a lot of it? Any of these points could be the problem. >Thankfully the rest of our celiac family did fine with this much needed treat. I have heard that some have problems when the honey is boiled into candy. Is this true? It depends on the person and if they try it before they are ready for it. > After going back to intro foods and increasing her acidophilus and yogurt we got her back into balance and avoided a hospitalization. With every set back, it does not take her long to thin down, since she is growing so fast. This always seems to worsen her ASD problems too for the set back duration only. So, she never " looses " weight but her body becomes much thinner...and her behavior becomes more asd like. Does this make since? Yes, flare ups can happen like this, for most of us it is part of the learning curve of what foods and in what quantities we can tolerate. It is good do hear that she is bouncing back and didn't require hospitalization. > We are becoming very frustrated with this roller coaster ride. I know that Elaine said two years for cd...but I am often fearful that we may be doing something wrong. I (cd myself) have gained a much needed 16 pounds so I know that SCD is not to blame. But my SCD food choices and preferences are much broader than hers now. The two years is an average. What is most important is the rule of thumb of staying on the diet at least one year after the last symptom has disappeared. > I am very concerned about her being so thin. She looks better and is growing much better than six months ago, thanks to SCDiet. Her ASD problems have almost all but vanished. But at the age of 2 she is as tall as an average 2T but has the waist of a baby that wears 9- 12 month clothes! > This leaves our SCD choices for her being the SCD yogurt (both goat and bovine), cheeses, dry curd, meats, eggs, fruits and vegetables. WE are truly having a difficult time putting weight on her. Like many kids on this list serve, she is PICKY too! Yet, if we could accomplish this feat and get her to gain weight, she would look even better. It would be nice if we didn't have to pen her pants up anymore. Ripe bananas, avocados, homemade mayonnaise made with good oils like sunflower safflower etc.; yogurt smoothies. (and many others) find digestion easier with addition of fat - particularly meals with protiens. Look at the CCK (cholesystokinin) link particularly. http://home.comcast.net/~john.kimball1/BiologyPages/G/GITract.html Decent 'Reader's Digest'-type site, imo. Also, this site may help explain how certain enzymes (those that occur in the body naturally) and metabolic regulatory activites cycle with type of food consumption. Bit more detail, this: http://ajpgi.physiology.org/cgi/content/full/281/6/G1413 One of the reasons I use enz is to assist Glenn's body with these processes. I believe when you trialed enz (A; not Carol) you found that you had a poor reaction. Did you just mean your daughter or you too? (I ALWAYS trial things on myself before I give them to Glenn) - wasn't sure what you did with miss k. I know your concern with enz and damaged gut - I talked to Devin before using enz too - same reasoning ;-) > Do any of you think it is feeding some of the layers of " bad gut > bugs " still??? As most folks don't live in a bubble, you are likely NEVER going to eradicate bad critters completely. But you can control them; to a degree by the methods you mention above. Guest guest
Dear Sheila and all who helped, I thank you so very much for your help. I am going to start introducing two smothies to her a day, instead of our typical one. I truly believe that my entire family had yeast issues and biofilm issues. Whe use to get out right thrush, before SCD. At leaset that problem is gone. But it seems like killing the stuff down under is more of a problem. She never before recieved honey is this concentrated quantity before. But she has been given crushed nuts in muffins and seemed to do ok. Regardless she will not be getting any more candy or crushed nuts. We are going back to basics. The poor thing truly suffers, and no doctor will ever prescribe anything for her pain since she is so young. To those who suggested enzymes. We already tried the enzymes, and the protease in them caused a " dangerous " set back and FLARE in not just me but my two year old too. So I do not think we will be trying this again any day soon. I hope that the layers of biofilms continue to slowly die off with just 100% adherance to SCD and the BTVC book. WE have already gone through die off four times since we have started. The first, being the worse. It is obvious that this war of the " gut bugs " is not going to be won over night. Our Six months is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Even one year after the last symptoms leave, I don't think that we will ever go back to the SADiet. To big of a risk. Plus, I have learned that many old timmers have never been able to. So, we are just going to have to gain acceptance of our new life style and learn how to cook better and with more pizaz! God Bless all you wonderful helpers! Sincerely, Anotinette and (both CD) and three kids (CD, Colitis, ADHD, ASD and Hyperekplexia) SCD since 2/06 No meds none of us, much success all five of us!
