Guest guest
Ok, I have gone to the 3 supermarkets in Coronado, where we live and I have found from Organics a unfiltered apple juice not from concentrate that says that the apples and rinsed and pressed and the jice is slowly pasteurized and bottled. It comes in a clear plastic bottle. I called them and they say they do not cheat in their labels. Also I have found a R.W. Knudsen organic apple juice from whole, organic apples that says unsweetened, but it does not say pressed and pasteurized and it does not say Just Juice. It comes in a bottle not in a plastic one. What do you think? Would these be legal? In all three supermarkets all Welchs grape juices come from concentrate She is being tapered from Prednisone, so as soon as she is, we will start again from scratch.. Thank you for everything again. Guest guest
Welch's grape juices .... IN THE BOTTLES.... are legal, even though the label says from concentrate. I know this is confusing. In all other instances, concentrates are not okay. Welch's FROZEN grape juice is NOT legal.. they add sugar to that. The Knudsen apple juice is not legal. The only Knudsen juices that are allowed are in their " Just Juice " line... the apple and pear and not in that line. The other apple juice you mention is *possibly* okay... but I personally would not use it. If you feel comfortable with it, you'd have to use it at your own risk. I would prefer a statement in writing.... not just someone on the phone.... but I still feel uncomfortable about not knowing exactly how long the juice is cooked in the factory. When they say " slowly pasteurized " , I don't really know what that means... or how much sorbitol/fructose is concentrating in that time. With apple or pear, it's just a lot more tricky for SCD-ers. Sorry. To be honest, my daughter won't drink anything but honey lemonade (fresh lemon juice squeezed into water... a bit of honey to sweeten), so I don't ever buy pre-made juice at all. If I did, and I was just dead set on buying apple cider of some kind, I would have to practically watch them press it before my very eyes.... and pour it into the bottle. I can't help it... I'm THAT cautious and skeptical. I have a cheap juicer (bought for $24 at a hardware store clearance sale) that I could use if Katera would drink juice... but she doesn't like it, so I just use that for carrot juice for myself. Guest guest
I want to clarify something on the Welch's grape juice... it is only the 100% pure grape juice, not any of their juice blends. Patti Re: Re: Juice Welch's grape juices .... IN THE BOTTLES.... are legal, even though the label says from concentrate. I know this is confusing. In all other instances, concentrates are not okay. Guest guest
Another correction/clarification.... I typed: <<The Knudsen apple juice is not legal. The only Knudsen juices that are allowed are in their " Just Juice " line... the apple and pear and not in that line.>> .....and now see a typo. That last part SHOULD read: " the apple and pear are not in that line " . Knudsen apple juice, Knudsen pear juice..... both ILLEGAL. thanks for putting up with me today, Patti
Guest guest
Well... I don't see why fresh lemon juice would not be okay, if you strain out the pulp. I just make Katera's drink by the cup... and she only needs just enough lemon juice to give it a bit of flavor, so the way I make it is weaker than regular lemonade. I use one quarter of a lemon... cut in a wedge... and squirt it into about ten ounces of cold, filtered water through a fine mesh sieve (to catch the pips & pulp), then add about a teaspoon of honey and stir, stir, stir. I guess I would suggest you use about two whole lemons per quart, and a heaping Tablespoon-ish of honey. You'll probably just need to experiment until it tastes right to you. Limeade is great, too! Patti Re: Juice > Hi Patti, The honey-lemonade you mentioned sounds delicious. Thanks for giving me another idea for a drink. I'm getting a little " graped out " from all the Welches (although I love it, it's a little sweet). I'll try the lemondade and see how it goes. Is it okay to have it only two months into the diet? Just wondering how many lemons per quart? Thanks again! Your advice is always great! Best wishes, Ronnie
Guest guest
Thanks so much Patti. Today we are trying the lemonade and I am also buying a juicer, I am sorry to give you so much trouble with the juice but when all the family started on the diet (and we still are) we used to drink plain water. When we saw that the basic diet called for apple and grape juice, we adhered immediately to it. We were even worried that Anya does not like jello so we have been trying to sneak some in soup. She never liked jello, not even the classic given at parties.. We imagined the basic diet was mandatory. Now I am wondering if we have to cook the fruit to juice it, or if she can start with raw home made apple juice in case she demands juice, not lemonade. Sometimes I have tried giving her homemade raw grape juice which she has not particularly liked. Guest guest
Dear Patty, you are right in all you say, I'l read a lot more times the book. The menu for the first 5 days is on Page 69 of Breaking the vicious cycle book. When we found ellis apple juice, we called the company to see what was the difference between cider and juice. At the time we were in N. Carolina and they had both, cider and juice. The answer was that the contents in both bottles was exactly the same, the fact was that some people call it cider and others call it juice. This was said by a high executive at ellis, so we believed him. As the diet calls for slow introduction of new foods, we kept the diet of pag. 69 and slowily introduced new things. At this time se are already eating 12 vegetables, 8 fruits, cheddar cheese and almonds. Anyas family > > > > > > Thanks so much Patti. Guest guest
If you are still in NC, you can get cider from Sky Top Apple Orchard up in Flat Rock, and they press it themselves right there at the orchard. You can even take a tour of the cider press area. I'm sure that there are other places to get cider, but I know for sure that theirs is OK. Guest guest
Hi Meleah, no unfortunately we are now in Coronado, CA, actually we are from Mexico and therefore not acquainted with a lot of things here. We are trying our best though and with the help of all of you I am sure we will succeed. Perhaps you could tell me what apple butter is? Guest guest
Apple butter is awesome. It really is pretty much apple sauce, but you blend it totally smooth. So, you peal and core your apples. Put them in a pot, and cook them until soft. Then, puree in a blender until smooth(you can also press them through a fine mesh seive). Add you sweetener which would be honey for scders. Add spices like cinamon, cloves, nutmeg, and giner to your own taste. Return the apple mixture to your pot, and cook a little longer(mainly to blend spice flavor). That's it. I love apple butter on biscuits and pancakes. I haven't made scd biscuits or pancakes yet, but that's how we ate it before we were scd. If you have any other questions about what certain ingredients or foods are, just let me know. I'll be glad to help. Meleah Re: Re: Juice >> >> > Dear Patty, you are right in all you say, I'l read a lot more times the >> > book. Guest guest
<<The answer was that the contents in both bottles was exactly the same, the fact was that some people call it cider and others call it juice. This was said by a high executive at ellis, so we believed him. >> Sadly, the elli's definition of " cider " is not the same as Elaine Gottschall's definition. So, for the purposes of SCD, you need to be sure to ONLY use a fresh-pressed juice/cider that has not been cooked down, filtered or purified/clarified in any way. We just feel there is so much potential for problems associated with commercial apple juice/cider (to me, it doesn't matter what you call it), that we want to stress that there just is no such thing as a commercial apple (or pear) juice brand that is safe to recommend for people on SCD. Sorry. Since most manufacturing executives don't fully understand the premise and details behind SCD, they will often assure customers that their product is absolutely fine to use, when it actually is not. Guest guest
Homejuiced fruits are okay... even though she would not otherwise be apple to have raw apples yet... because the juicing process removes all the fiber. Guest guest
There really should be a correction to the book and website. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet...and somewhat cloudy unfiltered unadulterated pressings of apples are what Elaine wanted whether they are called juice or cider. I have in front of me a bottle of such a beverage, by RW Knudsen, labeled " Organic Apple Juice from Whole, Organic Apples " , with the ingredients saying the same plus ascorbic acid. Perhaps the terminology is different in Canada, but here in southern California, I almost never see the term " Cider " attached to the unfiltered apple product that we are supposed to be drinking.... Lorilyn Temecula, CA Where does it say the basic diet calls for apple JUICE please? It specifies " Cider " on the Intro Diet and goes on to explain why apple juice is NOT permitted on page 76 edirion 10. Natural cider has nothing added.
