Hi Jill;

I believe the American CFF now has a statement on its web site stating NOT

to use the vinegar and water. We were told 17 years ago, by our clinic in

Toronto, that vinegar is NOT a disinfectant and is inadequate to kill the

bacterial germs that we are concerned about for CF, and to ignore

manufacturers recommendations for vinegar use. They used to have us use

disposable equipment, wash it in hot, soapy water and THOROUGHLY dry it (by

shaking, followed by air drying) after each use, then throw everything out

after 2 weeks. We dried the hose after each use by running the compressor

for a few minutes without the neb cup but did not try to wash the hose in

the two week period as it had filtered (sometimes moist) air running through

it but no meds or breathing into it as with the neb cup and mask or

mouthpiece. Eventually, they did studies in our hospital that demonstrated

that the plastic channel of the disposables enlarged within three uses and

no longer provided the best size of nebulized molecules of meds. They tested

various nebs and now recommend the PARI LC PLUS to us (the one with the

*red* internal part). Control III disinfectant is not available in our

country and the recommended method of cleaning from our clinic is to use

hot, soapy water to remove human proteins, followed by boiling for 10

minutes, followed by drying via shaking and air drying. Unfortunately, no

one seems to have studied how long to use the hoses before cleaning or

disposal. We find that taking the hose on and off to clean, stretches the

attachment and the hose starts popping off too easily. I bought a case of

hoses (with smooth inside lumen - NOT RIDGED) so we can change hoses every

couple of weeks. We still let the compressor run for a few minutes after

each use to ensure the hose is dry. It is easy to see it is dry with the

smooth inside; very difficult to see any residue moisture with the ridged

hoses.

Hi Jill,

We have always used Control III which is a hospital grade disinfective. You can

get it from Grandmom Bev's pharmacy(and probably many other home health type

places), I forget the price but its around $15.00 a bottle. A bottle lasts a

long time as you only use a little mixed with water and you can use the same

batch for about 2 weeks. You can keep it in a Tupperware bowl or some such. You

are supposed to wash the nebs with soapy water, then rinse and soak in Control

III around 10 minutes, then rinse and allow to air dry. This is what we have

done forever and I think it does a good job. We never used vinegar. Now the

problem I have is getting my daughter to do it! (she is lazy!)

love,

M
