Peggy, what a frustrating mess.

Yes, insurance companies pay by what the hospital codes, that's why

we parents must suffer through watching every tiny thing spent during

a hospital stay.

You need to call the hospital business office and get an itemized

list of charges from 's stay. Go over it with a fine-toothed

comb.

This is just one reason advocacy groups recommend that a patient (no

matter what they're in the hospital for, and no matter their age)

have someone stay with the patient 24/7. This is especially important

if the patient is a minor or if the patient is too ill to pay

attention to what's going on around them. People make mistakes.

The last time my son was in for an admission (Sept. 1996), the

hospital charged us for some things I knew he never got, so I asked

them to audit his chart. They removed over $800 in erroneous charges,

and because they'd already billed the insurance company, they had to

refund the money to the company.

So, I recommend you call the hospital business office, request an

audit of the chart, request re-coding (I was told the business office

cannot re-code, the doctor must rewrite the new code -- a similar

mess happened when my daughter was admitted overnight for a skull

fracture 2 1/2 years ago, and it took six months to resolve -- one

month alone just to track down the ER doc to rewrite the codes in her

chart!).

Also, keep following up with your insurance company after the

business office has amended any charges. You want to be sure that the

insurance company has correctly amended 's cap.

I think dealing with health insurance issues is the most aggravating

stressor! We should be able to trust that hospitals aren't ripping us

off. But guess what? EVERY time one of my kids (or I) were

hospitalized (knock wood, very rare occasions!), I always requested

an itemized statement upon dismissal, and I *always, always* found

errors.

Kick butt.

> I just wanted to vent about something that some of you have

probably faced before, but I never expected to happen.  Shows what I

know.  Okay, my son was in the hospital for the first time for

13 days in August of last year.  When we received the bills from the

hospital, they had charged about $30,000, however the insurance

company would only allow them to charge $12,000, so that was all they

paid.  Well, Jonah was in a few weeks ago as you all know.  We

brought him home to do his meds after three days, so naturally, we

assumed we would be saving charges to his lifetime max by doing

this.  The bills began coming from the hospital and were about

$5,000.  Well, I assumed the insurance company would make them reduce

it to half again.  Guess what, they are actually going to pay them

$12,600.  They are paying them as much as they did for 's 13

days. Unbelievable.  Their explanation to me was that the hospital

puts in codes and under their contract, they are required to pay them

for the value of the codes regardless of the amount the hospital

actually charged.  I said, so okay what if I get an itemized

statement and there are things that don't mesh.  They said we will

refer you to the hospital to take up your grievance because under

their contract they cannot dispute them.  They have to trust them to

be honest. YEAH RIGHT!! There is no way they did as much for Jonah as

they did and now he is also going to be billed for home health

care for many days.  I should have left him there and made them

actually do the work they must have claimed to do.
