Guest guest
Angi, My daughters picc line was put in just prior to us being discharged to go home. The pharmaceutical(sp) company then came out to the house and brought all the medication and necessary equipment for us to do the treatments at home. My daughter was older that your son and she did all the treatments by herself with my supervision. It was much nicer for her to be at home than to still be in the hospital. We only had to watch for excessive bleeding and redness and we had the nurse come out about every other day and check things to make sure everything was ok. The nurse even removed the line when it was time. This worked great for us. It is whatever your comfort level is. Also, you have many more things to see to than I did. Three small children. Do what makes you feel most comfortable. Tina W., mother of , 18yo wcf picc line questions is going in tomorrow for a picc line... we've had two previously and each entailed a 3 to 4 day hospital stay... this time they are recommending it as an out-patient procedure - we go in, have the line placed and go home. We were given the option of him receiving his first dose of meds at home or at the hospital. is almost 6. I don't know of any other child who has had this done as an out-patient and I know of very few adults. I don't know the arguments for/against either out-patient or admittance, other than you obviously feel better at home... can anyone out there help me work this through in my mind so I can find comfort with what they're recommending or provide the arguments (if necessary) to have him admitted? Have any of you had a picc line placed in your child on out-patient basis? Thanks much in advance for any help you can offer. The first time she was 8 years old and the second one was done this year. Everything went find you just have to clean everything and make sure the line is sterile at all time. The biggest worry is bacteria getting in the line so just sterilize everything. My daughter didn't want to be in the hospital and I didn't want her to be either she has been there enough. They just carry around a pump in a little baggy either a fanny pack or this last one looked like a purse she would just put it around her arm and she would do what ever she wanted until the alarm would go off. By that time I would have the area that we unhook the line all clean and ready. It really is not that bad a visiting nurse comes and checks on you to make sure everything is going OK and she does the dressing changes too. What antibiotics are you using? Guest guest
Hi Angi, My daughter (Do you like her name ? ) has had picc lines placed as an outpatient but she was older than . Once she had some medicine to calm her, she didn't like it (it was oral and she had to drink it) and I couldn't say it made a lot of difference. For her it went fine but now she has trouble getting picc lines, the past 2 times they have tried and failed. They have a rule that people can't go home on just peripheral IV's so she has had to stay in the hospital the whole time for her last 2 tuneups. Oh well. I hope this helps. love, M Mom of age 19 wcf and Nick age 21 nocf
