Be very careful of juice. I bought the big bottle of juice with Winnie The

Pooh and Tigger on the front (don't know the brand name). It said 100% juice

on the front. After Sammy's cheeks turned bright red, I read on the back of

the bottle that it contained red color additive. I called the company to see

how they could lie on the label because clearly it was not 100% juice. They

said they follow FDA guidelines and that if it is a certain percentage of

something they don't have to list it.

100% juice my you know what......

The only juice I let my son drink is Heinz baby pearjuice or organic

pear juice and pineapple juice made from concentrate, it's good with

club soda. Most juices like apple, orange, banana added and any berry

juices(I'm not sure about cranberry) are high in phenols and

salycilates.

The legal juices are....

Tropicana Pure Premium OJ (the original plain one... not with calcium added)

Welch's grape juice in bottles, not frozen

Kedem Kosher grape juice

Dole Pineapple juice in cans, not frozen

Canned or bottled tomato juice if only tomatoes and salt are added

Knudsen's " Just Juice " line... ONLY.... not their other juices

Apple cider... only the fresh-pressed, unfiltered, cloudy, uncooked (except to

pasteurize and bottle) kind.

I think that's all of them.... but I'm a little bleary eyed tonight.

Peach nectar... nope, there is no legal commercial one.... you'd have to juice

your own peaches. Any other home-juiced fruit is okay, too.

ALWAYS dilute any fruit juice if you're a newbie.

Juice

What juices are allowable on SCD? I know apple cider is, but is OJ?

Any peach etc nectars that have no other juices or additives allowed?

Thanks,

Michele

<<What about elli's apple juice not from concentrate?>>

ALL commercially bottled CLEAR apple juiceis officially NOT legal on SCD...

doesn't matter what brand name.

This is from Elaine's website:

" Apple juice- ILLEGAL- Apple juice usually has sugar added during processing.

Apple cider is allowed. It should be brown and not clear as apple juice is.

Cider should be diluted with water before drinking. "

Beyond that statement, Elaine explained it to us on the list years ago when she

participated here, that there is even a problem if they don't add ANYthing....

with both apple and pear juice.

It's something that occurs in the processing, lengthy cooking and filtering of

apple and/or pear juice... that basically concentrates the sorbitol and/or

fructose that naturally occur in the juice. Manufacturers are still allowed to

not list " concentrate " on the label... as long as they didn't ADD any

concentrate. The juice itself, however, becomes concentrated during that

process.

Be sure to visit her website, www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info and carefully

go through her " Legal/Illegal " list. It goes into more detail that the book.

The only apple juice that's allowed is what you could make at home with a

juicer.... or fresh-pressed cider, like what you might get from a local grower

at a farmer's market.... heated only enough to pasteurize it and do the

bottling, if it's sealed.

Welch's grape juice from concentrate is allowed. No commercial apple juice of

any kind is

allowed.

Freshly pressed apple cider IS allowed. It is cloudy and usually in a

refrigerated area.

Hi Patti,

The honey-lemonade you mentioned sounds delicious. Thanks for giving

me another idea for a drink. I'm getting a little " graped out " from

all the Welches (although I love it, it's a little sweet). I'll try

the lemondade and see how it goes. Is it okay to have it only two

months into the diet? Just wondering how many lemons per quart?

Thanks again! Your advice is always great!

Best wishes,

Ronnie

have to use it at your own risk. I would prefer a statement in

writing.... not just someone on the phone.... but I still feel

uncomfortable about not knowing exactly how long the juice is cooked

in the factory. When they say " slowly pasteurized " , I don't really

know what that means... or how much sorbitol/fructose is

concentrating in that time. With apple or pear, it's just a lot more

tricky for SCD-ers. Sorry.

Where does it say the basic diet calls for apple JUICE please?

It specifies " Cider " on the Intro Diet and goes on to explain why apple juice is

NOT

permitted on page 76 edirion 10.

Natural cider has nothing added.

I am not trying to be contrary, but will continue pointing out the importance

of reading

BTVC carefully and more than once. When you are clear on the protocols of the

diet your

chances of success are obviously increased. Consuming foods with illegal sugar

and starch

even involuntarily will continue to feed bad bacteria and hinder progress.

Elaine is referring to freshly pressed coder not bottled. It says so right on

page 76.

We have also stated which Knudson Juoices are legal and that is only the " Just

Juice " line.

I'm sorry this got lost in translation for you.

Legal apple cider is (From the BTVC website):

" It is brown and not clear as apple juice is. It should be just

straight pressed apples. It is usually pasteurized in order to kill

bacteria. Cider should be diluted with water before drinking. "

Since it is only pasteurized it has to be refrigerated.

Please also see " Apple Juice and Apple Cider "

at the Knowledge base at

http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/a_to_f.htm

This will help explain it further.
