Guest guest
Yes, the vest works very well for most..In fact , many test results show it is much better & should be used whenever the doc has say percussion. It is more consistent & evenly shaken. This gives the best overall results. My granddaughter uses hers each day. That is only percussion she gets though with her exercise ,She is 19 & in VERY good condition, health wise too. They should use the vest as the doc/RT prescribed. Best wishes, What a great aunt you are . They are lucky LOVE & HUGS, grandmoMBEV chest percussion and other thoughts I still remember a 1 yr old who opened birthday presents and has the grace to make sure each person who gave her a gift felt as if theirs was the most special. My niece was, and still is, an incredible child. My niece and I don't live in the same state. She is in NJ (I grew up in NJ) and I am in CT. Is anyone else on this list from either state? I went to NJ for 3 days during each week she was in the hospital for her tune-up. I was able to see 1st hand what this child has to go through on a daily basis. In fact, they admitted another cf child during her stay (fortunately, near the end of her stay) so that any time either was out of his/her room a mask had to be worn to be sure bacteria wasn't transmitted to either of them. The other thing is the impact on all of us in the family. The impact on her sister, my 8 yr old niece, was also profound. I spent time with her, as well. While both parents were out, I was able to get her her evening snack, shower, and do her normal routine for getting ready for bed. Fortunately, she was allowed at the hospital for visits, which helped. I was wondering if everyone does the chest percussion by hand or if most use the vest. My niece got the vest by the time she was discharged, but I think they will only be using it sparingly- maybe once daily. In your experiences, has the vest been as effective as manual percussion? They were also told that if she's away from home for a night that she could use the acapella for a treatment. I felt her back while she was using it and could feel the vibrations, but it doesn't seem enough. I suppose if it's only occasionally a substitute that it's ok. If I know my sister and brother-in-law it won't be the case unless absolutely necessary. Well, I don't want to make this any longer than I've already done. Thank you. Guest guest
Bev, Thanks for your response. At this point, I believe my sister and brother-in-law are mostly doing the percussion by hand using the " cups " . However, if I could find some studies showing equal or better results from the vest it might make things easier for them. I will do some research to see what I can find. I'm happy that your granddaughter is doing so well. Is she in college? Guest guest
Your welcome. I am sure you will hear from others if you already haven't. Most are using the vest. If you send me your address, I can send you their literature & it tells all about the studies, etc. I am sure they have seen some of ....At least I guess that if they have one. Their web site has more facts & " stuff " on it as well . I believe it is still on their as www.advancedrespiratory.com it was called the vest for a long time .I will give you there toll free number & you can ask for patients services. Just ask them to send you all the abstract literature on the development of the VEST. The number is 1-..it will save them so much time & if they let TV or movies or computer or whatever the age calls for entertainment, it will become just a routine event for them to put on the vest , sit & watch. I hope it will work for them, it takes a bit of time for some. Yes, my granddaughter is a sophomore. Doing very well & even running cross country too. Thanks & I hope you enjoy the list. I LOVE IT!! Guest guest
Hi Jill, Where in NJ are you from originally? I am from PA near philly and know amuch of south Jersey. About the vest, why are they only going to be using it sparingly? We did manual Pt for 4 & 1/2 long years until our daughter got her vest this past May. We only do manual as a back up to the vest because it is so much better than manual pt for us. is " unproductive " with manual PT but she does get a bit of mucus out with the vest (only a tiny bit) We do not use the acapella because is only five but it is supposed to be great too. If Your niece wants to spend the night at a friend's house this is a good way of keeping her on her regimine without too much interference in her " regular life " . It is also the only PT some people will do at all. CF is tough on the whole family and I am happy to know that you are stepping up to help even if it is from another state. Mom of ,AKA " the Queen of the Universe " who is 5 with CF. > I still remember a 1 yr old who opened birthday presents and has the grace to make sure each person who gave her a gift felt as if theirs was the most special. Guest guest
Jill, Go to www.thevest.com. We have a bunch of research about CPT vs. Te Vest. Also, you can call customer service at 1- and ask for the research articles. Re: chest percussion and other thoughts Bev, Thanks for your response. Guest guest
Hi Jill, We are from NJ, we go to CHOP in Philadelphia, what center does your neice use? got the vest almost a year ago, we use it twice a day, when he is sick we use it 3 times a day. It seems to be working, sometimes we do percussion, when we arent near the vest and he needs a treatment, like when we go visiting and take the neb for that treatment. also gets percussion in school when he is sick, the nurse does it. Best thoughts to your family, I am sure your neice is a very special little girl with a great big heart, seems like these kids have big hearts and personalities. Take care, , mommy of 4, 4 wcf. Guest guest
Hi, Where are you in NJ? You must be closer to Philadelphia than my sister. She is in Madison and my niece was in town Memorial. I imagine if I can get them to go to another doctor for an opinion it would be in NY. However, in my travels over the internet I came across a Dr. n from CHOP. Apparently, he is/was chief of pulmonary and cf center. Do you use him for or do you use someone else there? Do you know anything about him? How old are your other children? Is the youngest? Thank you, . Guest guest
Jill, We go to CHOP too. Dr. is not the head of the CF center at CHOP it is Dr. Scanlon. I think that dr. is the head of pulmonology still though. Dr. Scanlon is good but a bit ....umm...... technical? or maybe that's not the right word maybe he isn't as personable as we would like. Dr. is nice but I haven't had a lot of experience with him (he does see CF patients) I much prefer Dr. Weiner. He is great with kids (has four small ones himself, 5, 3 and a twin newborns) and is easy to talk to and joke around with. The 2nd in command over there is good too. (his name always escapes me until I see him then it pops into my mind) He is really good with the kids and easy to talk to. Dr. Panich is nice but never wamed up to him as much as Dr Weiner or Dr. " Second in command " (who's name I can't come up with for the life of me. These are the ones that we have the most experience with. If your family chooses to come to CHOP It was named the best children's hospital in the US for the last couple of years. Guest guest
, Thank you so much for your email. If they decide to go to CHOP your insight will be very helpful. It's hard to go someplace blindly and your take on the various doctors is greatly appreciated. You asked in an earlier email where I'm from originally. I grew up in Springfield, NJ and came to CT to go to college and grad school. Like so many others, I never went back. Now, in middle age, I don't think I want to go anywhere else. I love New England and it's not excessively far from my sister, and her family, in Madison or my mom who is still in Springfield. As it turns out, they are using the vest twice each day and doing it manually once each day. It's interesting to me that is more productive using the vest. I hope it will be the same for my niece because then they wouldn't have do any manual except as back-up as you do. BTW, I went to your webpage. It's wonderful what you've done. Thank you for sharing it. Jill ps I'm really sorry about . I lost both of my cats and still miss them terribly so I understand how you feel.
