Guest guest
I am in need of a legal source for pear sauce. We are going through so much I can't keep up. I am having a hard time staying ahead. I find myself cooking 4 hours a day most days which leaves me no time for my 3 year old. My oldest started school this year and it has been hard on all of us. I am just about to pull my hair out. I love this diet but I am at my wits end with the cooking and I love to cook! I peel 37 pounds of pears this week and that will last me about 14 days, but I have so many other things to cook, I just have no time for anything else! SO if anyone knows of a source for some time savers, please share! I am about ready to hang up my apron ! Mandy
Guest guest
I use baby food pears. I think the brand is Heinz. I think they're legal- I hope so. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be. If you peel the label off they look just like apple sauce and are good for sending in bag lunches. Guest guest
I'm sorry to have to tell you this... but there is no legal commercial pear or applesauce brands. You have to make your own. I know that's not what you want to hear. My favorite way to make either one is just to peel, core and cut up enough fruit to fill my crockpot to the rim... then I just turn it on and let it cook all day. The only tending it needs is that once it gets pretty hot, I turn it down from the high to the low setting... and I might stir it once at that point. That's it. Another idea is to just peel, core and quarter the pears.. and bake them in a 9x13 till soft (350...45 minutes?). I used to get frustrated with how fast we went through things like this... but I just had to force myself to make larger batches, so I was doing it less often. This might still seem overwhelming to you. Can you enlist a couple of friends, neighbors or relatives to come spend the day with you... and just do a cook-a-thon, then freeze the surplus? The peeling itself it so time-consuming, if you even just had a friend come over and peel pears while you cook/prepare something else.... or maybe hire (if you have to) a neighborhood teenager to just do a bunch of the peeling. Patti legal pear sauce? I am in need of a legal source for pear sauce. We are going through so much I can't keep up. I am having a hard time staying ahead. Guest guest
Amber... Commercial baby foods are not legal. Sorry. If you choose to use them, that's up to you... but they are definitely not legal. Not Heinz, or Earth's Best, or ANY brand. Patti Re: legal pear sauce? I use baby food pears. Guest guest
Why are they not legal? I have been using them based on the ingredients, so I am wondering what makes them not legal, so I know what to look for with future foods and products. > > Amber... Guest guest
Patti, I have the 10th anniversay edition of BTVC, and I don't see anywhere in it anything about commercial baby food. Could you please tell me what page that info is on? According to what is aloud, canned fruit canned in it's own juice is aloud. The only ingredients in the baby pears is " Pears, water, ascorbic acid " which one of those is the illegal ingredient? The ascorbic acid?? What I want to hear is what food is safe and not safe to feed my sick son, and I am very careful about what I feed him. When I decided on baby pears, I didn't see any reason on why it shouldn't be legal, or any information in the book I was reading saying it isn't safe to feed him, so I would like to know why, so in my future choices for food for him, I can know more what to look for, so I don't end up feeding him an 'illegal' food again. Thank-you so much for your help. Amber. > > I'm sorry to have to tell you this... but there is no legal commercial > pear or applesauce brands. You have to make your own. Guest guest
Well, we live in Amish country. At the Farmer's market yesterday I was able to find some apple butter and some pumpkin butter that are legal. Apples, water. Pumpkin, water. Both homemade. They had so many more flavors, But, I really just wanted the apple and my hubby wanted the pumpkin, so I just stuck with those. But, then, not commercial, per se. Do you live in a part of the country where you have such an access? I know that the fall festivals are going to be coming along anytime now. That should be a good source for things like the fruit butters. You can also talk to the people who made them and really find out what went into them. Like I was able to at the Farmer's Market yesterday. -- Re: legal pear sauce? I'm sorry to have to tell you this... but there is no legal commercial pear or applesauce brands. Guest guest
I agree. We went up to the mouintains to a local apple orchard. We were able to get freshly pressed cider and apple butter that are both made right there at the orchard. I was able to talk with the owners, so I am totally confident in what I purchased. I'm sure that this method still would be considered commercial products, and still cannot be endorsed by moderators as scd legal, but I'm certainly comfortable with this type of product. I definitely would not trust anything else. Meleah Re: legal pear sauce? > > I'm sorry to have to tell you this... but there is no legal commercial > pear > or applesauce brands. Guest guest
I know this is confusing and frustrating... it was for me, too. You won't find a reference to this in BTVC... I only learned about it by participating here on this list, and on the old " Elaine's Children " list when Elaine was with us. That was actually the first time I learned that we have to make our own applesauce! It's the same logic as with commercial applesauce.... the label may say just " apples " and ascorbic acid, but we can't use it. There a number of reasons why... but one big one is Elaine's experience with just how far you could really trust the big commercial food manufacturers with your (or your child's) health. Answer: About as far as you can throw them. This is WAY different than trusting a bunch of Amish ladies who made apple butter back home in their kitchens, then brought it to the Farmer's Market. Of course, even in that case, you are putting your trust in those Amish ladies... and you didn't actually SEE them make the apple butter... but I would certainly trust them more than some factory somewhere. Bottom line- Commercial manufacturers ARE allowed to get away with adding minute amounts of what WE define as illegals to their products without labeling them. Elaine just saw too many people pay the price... and was very strict about this, for our own good. The " fruit, canned in it's own juice " is very specific... and it means chunks of whole fruit, canned only in IT'S own juice. That doesn't mean chunks of a pear, canned in pear juice that's made from some OTHER pears... it's means specifically the juice from the pears in THAT can. I have never been able to find a product that meets that requirement. Even the Dole pineapple which USED to be okay... and labeled as " in it's own juice " ... no longer is. It's all really a bummer... and I'm sorry. None of us want anything but to see your child get completely well, though. Again, if you weigh all this out and still decide to go ahead using what you're using now, just know that is your decision.... but please let that be the first thing you change if your child doesn't make the progress you'd hoped for.
