Guest guest
Jill.... Just make sure the cultures listed in your " regular yogurt " are limited to these three: L.acidophilus, S.thermophilus, and L.bulgaricus. I think Dannon brand plain yogurt is one of the few that are okay. I order the Yogourmet starter from Lucy's. Patti Re: Tapioca and pectin in yogurt-is this legal? Thanks for your help Patti. I went back to the store and just made my first batch of yogurt with cow's milk and regular yogurt. I hope it works out! -Jill Recent Activity a.. 25New Members Visit Your Group
Guest guest
The only yogurt I found that is okay is Fage, which is at Trader Joes, at least in southern CA ( and I also saw it at a Pikes Place deli in Seattle.) The Dannon yogurt I have seen recently is not okay. Straus would be okay if it didn't have bifidus, and all the others I have seen have tapioca or pectin or gum or worse in them. Guest guest
Lorilyn, That's good to know about the Dannon plain. What was the illegal ingredient in it... do you remember? I have never used it as a starter, but I know it used to be okay... in fact, I was at their website just a few weeks ago and reading the label info there, it looked acceptable. But, it just goes to show that we always need to read our labels... every single time. They may have changed the product and just not updated their site. Guest guest
I think it was the Plain nonfat or lowfat, which was in itself hard to find, and when I found it, it was " illegal. " Very frustrating. Dannon is pushing the " activa " yogurt now, plain yogurts are clearly not a popular item. Oh well, I am happy with Fage. It would be *perfect* if I could verify that the strain of good bacteria in it was the one that helped with oxalates. Apparently there are something like 200 different strains of lactobacilus! Lorilyn Hi Lorilyn and Patti, > Lorilyn, That's good to know about the Dannon plain. What was the illegal ingredient in it... do you remember? Could it have been the Dannon Natural Plain NonFat or LowFat, they both have pectin? (I was looking at all the yogurt in the refrigerator case at the grocery and was completely mesmerized - Low fat, Non fat, Sugar free, stirred, extra creamy, not to mention all the flavours) Sheila, SCD Feb. 2001, UC 22yrs mom of and
Guest guest
Hi all, thought I'd jump in and say that I just used Dannon as starter - it's the All Natural Plain (not the low or non fat which do contain pectin). Here is the link to the BTVC website about starters that mentions Dannon http://breakingtheviciouscycle.info/beginners_guide/yoghurt/yog_starters.htm which does say to avoid the low fat. And here is a link to another section that mentions the change in labeling (although apparently it's still ok to use) http://breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/yoghurt_dannon_for_starter\ ..htm. I was concerned that they don't list the cultures anymore, so I came on the list and asked if anyone was still using it. I got a number of responses saying that people have called the company to verify that there is no Biffidus in it, and they were told that the formula of s. thermophilus, l. bulgaricus, and acidophilus hasn't changed - they just list " live yogurt cultures " instead of listing the first two separately like they used to. Then, I called to ask myself, and I was told the same thing. I also told them my situation, and that it was important for medical reasons that I do not ingest any cultures with " bifid " anywhere in the name. They told me it is not in there, and there is still only the three I mentioned. I didn't ask for it to be written on a letterhead, but I would think that they would just as easily lie in writing as they would on the phone - but perhaps I am mistaken about that. I am crossing my fingers that the regular (not low or non fat) Dannon is still ok, because it is really all I can get right now (been having a lot of trouble receiving things I've ordered - lots of trouble with mail in my area for the past few weeks). Anyway I hope this info helps.
