Guest guest
I'm stuck with amoxicillin for my son's strep throat. My doctor is away and his partner will not even consider a safer antiobitic. I have to treat the strep... I hope I don't undo all the progress made. Guest guest
Are you using SCD yogurt? If so, I would keep it flowing during this course of amoxicillin .... and then REALLY boost the yogurt up, if you can, AFTER he's all done taking it. I sure wish there was a better approach for strep. They only have to treat it because in a very TINY percentage of cases, it can turn into rheumatic fever, or in an even smaller number, systemic strep infections (in the blood), and other things. Most people would get over strep throat without the antibiotics, but you can't take the risk of these other infections..... even though the chances of it going that direction are miniscule. Don't worry, Cathy, just keep the yogurt flowing. If you can't or don't use yogurt yet, you've gotta keep an acidophilus supplement going in place of it. Patti Dear list: Upset!!! Guest guest
Hi Cathy, > I'm stuck with amoxicillin for my son's strep throat. My doctor is > away and his partner will not even consider a safer antiobitic. > I have to treat the strep... > I hope I don't undo all the progress made. > Can you go to anyone else for a second opinion? I had strep in the spring and I ended up in serious trouble. My doctor was away and the doc filling in said I *had* to have the antibiotics to prevent complications. A couple of months later I was speaking to a friend who's a family doctor and she said that in her opinion I probably did not need the antibiotics because by the time the throat swab confirmed strep most of the symptoms were gone and at that point complications from strep were extremely unlikely. She understood though that there was a very great likelihood that antibiotics would set off a flare - which it did. She feels that antibiotics are still being over prescribed unnecessarily. If you are unable to get a different antibiotic or do take a different one consider taking Saccharomyces boulardii at the same time as the antibiotic. Since it is a good yeast it may prevent a set back by preventing harmful microbes to overgrow. The antibiotic will not harm the S. boulardii. You can also take either a probiotic and/or yogurt between doses of the antibiotic. If you want to write me off list about this can contact me at sheilat@... Guest guest
Thanks Patti, Will up the probiotic. He won't eat much yogurt. At least I talked the Doc into a capsule...hopefully there is no starch inside it. I'm less upset now. Guest guest
Cathy, Next time tell the doctor he is allergic to it or that you give it to him and it makes him throw up. They will then give you a different one. Robin Dear list: Upset!!! Stuck with dangerous antiobioitic for strep I'm stuck with amoxicillin for my son's strep throat.
