How long do your baby wear a band?

Hi all,

My son got his DOC band when he's 4.5 months old for plagio treatment.

It took him a week to get used to it. Now just during the second week

check-up the CT tech told us that he probably only has 2-3 appointments

left.

I am so surprised because I heard that the treatment usually lasts from

8-12 weeks. The tech also told us that he may need a second band

because he's a severe case (12 mm) :(

I understand that every baby's different but did anyone here also have

such short treatment period in the first band? I already paid full for

the first band so I am worried if we really have to go for another band

in such a short time frame ...

Thanks a million~

Hi Jie-

How often will you go for appointments? Every week? The one big

benefit of banding a baby at 4 months old is that they are growing

so fast, that you will see change immediately and fast. The one

disadvantage of banding a baby at 4 months old, is that they grow so

fast, that they can outgrow the band before the plagio is fully

corrected. My understanding is that 12mm is actually closer to

moderate (my son started at 15mm and was borderline moderate-

severe), and maybe you'll get lucky and get all the correction you

need (or want) with one band. I would be very dilligent with keeping

it on him the required 23 hours a day (or more) and hopefully one

band will be enough. Just something to keep in mind, you don't have

to go from one band right into another. You can take a break in

between and think about it, see if it's the right choice for you, so

you'll definitely have time to assess his head shape at that point

before moving forward with a second, if necessary.

Good luck! I'll be hoping for a nice round head in just a few short

weeks! Have you seen a lot of improvement already?

My son wore a STARband and was only in it for 7 weeks!! We have great

correction based on what we see and what the numbers say. My son was

banded at 4.5 months as well- you are going to hit a major growth

spurt and the helmet will reshape the head in no time!!

Jie,

I think it has to do with how much they grow. The younger they are banded the more likely they are to grow out of the first band sooner. It doesn't mean you are getting less correction, it's just happening faster because they are growing faster.

We're looking at moving our daughter into a second helmet as well. She got her helmet at 4 1/2 months and she's been in it roughly 7 weeks. At this point there's not much more room to adjust since she's almost outgrown it. She's made a lot of improvement but she was a bad case starting out (her tort and plagio formed in utero) so she has more correction to go through. We'll get the official word soon, but I'm pretty sure we're looking at another helmet ;_;

Hi Jie,

My son was banded at 4.5 months also - his asymmetry was 18mm, and

his DOC Band lasted for 7 weeks. He was growing about 2cm a week,

but had a big growth spurt the last week, grew 4cm, and was no longer

able to wear band #1. We saw some pretty good results with the first

band - not as mind blowing as I was hoping to see, but still

impressive - and he was just scanned for band #2 today. They were

hoping to get the full 8 weeks out of the first band but it just

didn't happen... I'm not sure how long he'll be in band #2, but I

figure it'll be at least another 8-12 weeks. The good news is that

once you get started and you begin to see some results it all goes by

really fast!

I've also heard that 12mm is considered in the " moderate " range - I'm

surprised they told you it was severe...

Best of luck!

Jess

Mom to Luke - 6 months old - 7wks in DOC #1, awaiting DOC #2

Mom to JT - 2 years old - beautiful, naturally round head!

Thank you for everyone for the replies,

I feel a lot better now knowing that I am not alone in the rapid-

growing category. I am starting to pray for my little boy. Hopefully

he will not only grow fast, but do it in the right direction too :P

We are lucky enough to live within 15 min. drive of a CT center. I

brought him for his check every week. It's only 2 weeks since he wore

it full time so I guess the improvement is not so obvious at this

point. We did see some rounding at the lower back of his head but my

husband kept on telling me that the growth started before the band

was even there :(

Anyway I will just be patient and give him more tummy time. We are

told to come in for a re-evaluation two weeks from now. I will keep

you updated once I get the new readings.

Thanks again. Before I came across this group I could never imagine

so many of us moms on the same boat! Good luck to us all~
