Guest guest
What is best to grind medicine tablets with, without losing any medicine? A mortar and pestle like you would get in the kitchen store and use for grinding spices? Or do you put it in a good processor with apples or applesauce or whatever else you are going to mix it with? mother of Adam (8, PDD-NOS, Lyme, asthma, egg allergy, SCD 7/06) At 12:49 PM 10/19/2006, you wrote: >, > >The tablet forms of those meds, while they do still contain some illegal >starches, at least have no sugar or artificial color and flavorings. >Katera needed antibiotics for an ear infection a couple of years ago and I >requested the tablets (amoxicillin), which I then ground up and mixed in >applesauce. Guest guest
, I've tried those pill crusher doo-hickies that you buy at pharmacies ... and in my opinion, they are WORTHLESS. I bought a really inexpensive ceramic pestle at a kitchen shop... I think it was less than three dollars. I use it to grind Katera's tablets in a small custard cup. I have some little pottery-stoneware type ones with a smooth, glazed inner surface... and I also use the little tiny clear glass Pyrex custard cups. Some of the powdered tablet sometimes sticks to the end of the pestle... and I just scrape it off with the blade of a knife. Then, I just add applesauce to the custard cup, stir it around a bit and feed it to her. Her medicine is pretty bitter tasting, but she is a trouper and hangs in there for those few bites... then I give her a bite or two of " fresh " applesauce as a " chaser " . You might have to add some honey if the med is really foul tasting. Guest guest
For my youngest son, when he was maybe 4 or 5, I used the pill-crusher and put the crushed-pill-powder plus the nasty powder from opened Monolaurin capsules into a little shot glass, added a bit of honey, and stirred like mad until the powder was incorporated in the honey . I offered a chaser of juice, but my son insisted on a chaser of water before the juice so the nasty taste didn't ruin the taste of the juice! Shot glass, then water, then juice. And on his own initiative, he asked to be taught how to swallow pills like his older siblings. Lorilyn
