Guest guest
My daughter likes plain water most of all... but also enjoys honey lemonade. Fresh lemon juice, squirted into plain water... sweetened with honey. You could use saccharin instead of honey. Limeade is also good, made the same way. Some parents use weak mint tea... sweetened with honey (you can use saccharin). I have also made ginger tea... by pouring boiling water over slices of fresh ginger, cooling it, then straining.... adding honey to sweeten. I think others have added sparkling water to this, and honey (or saccharin) to make sort of a " ginger ale " kind of soda. I know that doctors recommend kids not drink so much juice these days.... not just for tooth decay, but just generally. Remember that we are always diluting the juice in the beginning. You don't HAVE to use dry curd cottage cheese. You can use dripped SCD yogurt in place of it in any SCD recipe. Snacks.... how about trying the baked cheese? Any SCD legal cheese can be used. Slice it, bake it on a parchment sheet (or a silpat) at 350, until bubbly (I don't remember how long... haven't done this in a while... can anyone else post a reminder??). I just watched them, I think... didn't time them. Ten minutes?? Anyway, then you let them cool completely and peel them off the parchment. Cripsy, crunchy... just like a cracker or chip. Easy... and legal. I think that if you go to the nutritionist that your pediatrician recommends.... if he/she is not familiar with SCD, you will not get much help from them. If I had three month old twins and was facing starting this diet.... I would experiment with the legal recipes... come up with a few things from the recipe section on www.pecanbread.com that he will eat... and then have someone come in and help you do some batch cooking. When I'm pressed for time, my daughter's meals are VERY simple.... left over cooked chicken breast, sliced very thin across the grain and mashed with avocado (and a little salt).... steamed butternut squash and scrambled eggs. Grated zucchini and carrots, with a bit of finely minced onion... sauteed in olive oil. Mashed banana and peanut butter... with SCD yogurt is her favorite breakfast. An quartered, peeled and cored apple can be " baked " in the microwave in two minutes.... sprinkled with cinnamon... so good. I do veggie/chicken stew/soup.... in the crockpot. Throw everything in the pot in the morning... dinner is ready at 5. I take out enough for her, with a slotted spoon and puree it with a handblender (she is not a great chewer and is just learning to self-feed with a spoon). I cook whole chickens in the crockpot... so I will have leftovers for several days. I just put the whole (washed) chicken in the pot... put onion, garlic, bay leaves, rosemary, ground pepper, etc. ..in the cavity and put the lid on. I don't add any liquid. Done in six hours.... VERY tender. Couldn't be easier. The tomato juice you found looks fine. As long as it only has salt and vit C added. <<i am so afraid i don't have the expertise or time to do this right.>> (((((((Eileen)))))) Don't worry so much.... you can do this. Should we hire a nutritionist to help? my dentist told me to only give my son juice 1x/day or he will end up having tooth decay. he isn't crazy about the tomato juice or plain water. are there any other bevarage options? i am so afraid my 2 1/2 yr old will get very sick when we start the SCD diet. he is already losing weight because we have eliminated milk and most of his snacks (eg. cornpops, cocoa puffs, rice krispies, potato chips, etc) so all he has to munch on are raisins. we want to try cooking a bunch of the SCD recipes first and freeze some. i will puree some and sneak small amounts of it inside of his jar babyfood (which will be phased out when we start the SCD) and try to introduce a new item every day so we know there will be something we can fall back on when he turns his nose up at pureed spaghetti squash. i am still searching for some of the hard to find ingredients. i still don't know where we will find the dry curd cottage cheese in south carolina or georgia. we have looked at the publix and kroger already with no luck. everytime i buy something, especially generic brands, i start to second guess if it is really legal. for instance, i bought a can of Red Gold brand fresh squeezed tomato juice because it was the cheapest and it only had tomatoes, salt & vitC (ascorbic acid). it also said it had no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Should i have just bought heinz or campbells? did anyone hire a nutritionist to assist with balancing out the menus? i have 3 month old twin girls and i don't know how i am going to pull this off (researching, planning menus, shopping, cooking, feeding, etc.). i am so afraid i don't have the expertise or time to do this right. i got my pediatrician to refer my son to a nutritionist but what diagnosis code would health insurance require in order to pay for the visits? my son is malnourished and sick and needs immediate intervention but justifying this to my health insurance company may be difficult. eileen mom of 2 1/2 yr old asd son and 3 month old twin girls
Guest guest
I give my boys two ounces of juice to 6-8 ounces of water. I started out giving them whole juice, then 3/4 juice 1/4 water, then 1/2 to 1/2 and now down to small amount of juice to much water. They got weaned off the juice and still get the juice flavor. So, that way through the course of the day they only drink the equivalent of one cup of juice. Also, I give them goat yogurt to drink. To them it is like milk because it is so runny. That is what my boys drink throughout the day and they are doing fine with it. It does help to keep them from getting to much sugar in the juice. Guest guest
Ilene, If you have a BJs store close by, you can buy the dry curd cottage cheese there. I just bought my first container today. I had looked at all of the grocery stores...even the health food store...and no one had it. I heard through the list the BJs carried it, and I went today. Hooray! They had it. I'd check into that. Meleah Any other Beverage Options?? Guest guest
I have been to a nutritionist and she is helping me work up a plan so I can get enough calories each day. I have lost about 100 lbs in the last year due to my illnesses - not the SCD. I have only been on the diet a short time. I go back to see her on Wednesday to see what plan she has put together. I, like you am concerned about my drink options. I don't like drinking only juice, and tea was one of my mainstays. So, this is going to be a difficult transition for me. Would failure to thrive be a viable diagnosis? Mal > Any other Beverage Options??
