Guest guest
On page 63 of BTVC, in the chapter on Introducing the Diet, Elaine says that " In general, squash, tomato, string beans, and carrots, all in cooked form, are well tolerated. " This is for post-diarrhea, which we were at, even though we were at the intro diet. Since my son seemed to be reacting to oxalates and only squash, of these four " well-tolerated " vegetables, was fairly low-oxalate, I took the intro diet as a sample and substituted butternut squash for the carrots in the soup. I also made a " breakfast pudding " with hot squash, ghee, and a dash of cinnamon (sometimes with honey and/or applesauce but I suspect the moderators would say that is for a little later in the diet) and my kids loved it. (Butter, and especially ghee, are easily digested given that they contain short-chain fat.) I also figured that, since chicken and ground beef were allowed, ground turkey was likely okay, so I made breakfast patties of ground turkey with sage and salt. So our intro diet was low oxalate and egg free, but tolerated and actually fairly tasty. Hope this helps you tolerate some healing foods! Guest guest
Lora, I would suggest you take a look at some of the foods listed on www.pecanbread.com in the " Food Preparation " section under the link " ASD Intro Diet " . There are some ideas there for adapting the intro diet for dairy free kids.... and some foods that might work for you. I think if you just simply can't do it, you should definitely go with any legal foods that you can tolerate, though remember that any fruits and veggies need to be peeled and cooked at first (ripe banana or avocado are exceptions... don't need to be cooked). Then, perhaps you can get better enough to go back and do a couple of days of the intro diet later on, to jump start to the next level of healing. Patti Lots of Trouble with Intro Hi all, I was on the intro diet for only one day at the beginning of the week. I had lots of problems with the intro foods, and couldn't continue for even a second day. Now I am very discouraged, and afraid that I can't try the diet, because I can't do the intro diet or slow food introduction right. I have Interstitial Cystitis (a constantly painful bladder condition), and there are many things I cannot eat (or drink) because of this condition. I found that the chicken soup aggravated my IC considerably. Also, the vanilla in the cheese cake did the same. And, I already knew that cheese is a problem with my gastro problem, which is severe C not D. So between the DCCC for breakfast and the cheese cake, it was too much for me. I can't eat the jello or drink apple cider because of my bladder condition. So all I am left with is plain chicken (not soup) and eggs (and the yogurt too although, If I understand correctly that shouldn't be eaten in large quantities right away). So, I don't have enough to make it through a couple of days on the intro. Plus, since foods are supposed to be introduced slowly, one at a time for a few days per food, It will take a long time before I have enough to eat in a day (I can't do any nut baking, due to allergy, and there are a great many fruits I can't eat because of Interstitial Cystitis). In spite of my gastro problems I do have a regular appetite, and if I get too hungry I get very dizzy, lightheaded and nauseous (I have been tested for diabetes, and I don't have it). The only alternative I can think of is to jump right into eating meals made only made from legal ingredients that don't affect my Interstitial Cystitis, but I know that's not how the diet is supposed to be followed. I just don't know what to do now. Guest guest
Hi all, Thank you to everyone who responded to my post. Patti, I'm going to head to pecanbread and look at the ASD intro link you mentioned. And, like you said, even if that dosen't work for me yet I am still going to work with whatever SCD foods I can, until I can try the intro again. Thanks again, Lora
