Guest guest
The only Knudsen juices that are SCD legal are in their " Just Juice " line. Concentrating of apple and pear juices, in commecial processing, renders those juices illegal. Sorry. It doesn't matter that they " didn't add anything " . The Larabars have been very controversial. I personally have never... and would never.... buy them. I'll let someone else answer. Beets are legal..... but you need to be very cautious about using any pre-made product. Companies can change their recipes at any time, without notifying you in advance. It has happened.... a few years ago, Shelton's hot dogs were " legal " , then they suddenly decided to start adding potato starch. You need to be ultra cautious.... and then PULL THAT PRODUCT, even if it appears to be legal.... if your child is not doing well or not making progress on SCD. <<Could I also be confident of giving her the ground beef burgers which are 100% meat according to the label and man I spoke to on the phone?>> Get it in writing..... and then, watch your child and be prepared to remove ANY pre-made product if she doesn't make the progress you hoped for. Patti Legal? I have contacted the Larabars company, which makes granola bars from pure ingredients- dates, nuts and dehydrated fruits. They tell me NOTHING is added at any stage of the process. The same is true of the company, Justtomatoes, which deydrate fruit and vegetables- again, nothing added. I also contacted Knudsens about their juices. Again, they concentrate their juice with nothing added and then rehydrate it with filtered water to allow them the variety of juice all year round. Could I be confident enough to give these snacks and drinks to my daughter who is following the SCD and making good progress? Are beets legal? I saw the ingredient-sodium lactate from beets, on a package of Apple gate Farms organic beef. I read somewhere where AF products are used on this diet. Could I also be confident of giving her the ground beef burgers which are 100% meat according to the label and man I spoke to on the phone? She doesn't like homemade ones. That is not allowed. >The same is true of the > company, Justtomatoes, which deydrate fruit and vegetables- again, > nothing added. I also contacted Knudsens about their juices. Only the " Just Juice " line from Knudsens is allowed, not their others -- organic or otherwise > > Could I be confident enough to give these snacks and drinks to my > daughter who is following the SCD and making good progress? You do so at your own risk. We cannot take responsibility for encouraging store bought products. They can be subject to change or there can be questions about details of the legal sounding ingredients. > > Are beets legal? Some Applegate products are not legal. Sodium lactate is not legal. I have signed off on encouraging the use of any store bought food that was not approved by Elaine and even some that were, based on a number of bad experiences. Someone else should add their perspective as I am biased against convenience foods Mimi tells me many insist they can't do SCD without them. As I said yesterday, my food comes from the Mixmaster, not the Postmaster Carol F. SCD 6 years, Celiac
Guest guest
Hi <angelakitching@, > I have contacted the Larabars company, which makes granola bars from > pure ingredients- dates, nuts and dehydrated fruits. They tell me > NOTHING is added at any stage of the process. They do have more than just this because some of their ingredients include juice concentrates (which may or may not be legal or may or may not be *tolerated*). The banana cookie bar likely doesn't use sufficiently ripe bananas. And as carol wrote you'd have to be sure they used legal dates. All that said this is a very advanced food item with either almond (probably with the fibrous skins), dried fruit or cashews which are a very starchy nut (and for later after some healing occurs). If your daughter is tolerating almond skins and dried fruit and is symptom free she may be able to toleerate these types of ingredients. This type of food even for those who are doing fantastic on the diet with huge improvements should only be an occasional treat because it is such a large hit of concentrated fiber and legal sugar - it may be more than the body can tolerate at once. > The same is true of the > company, Justtomatoes, which deydrate fruit and vegetables- again, > nothing added. Some of the Just Tomatoes products are legal. They are just dried fruit and veggies. *But* this is not an endorsement of all their products. There are many that are illegal. You'd have to check each fruit or veggie in 3 ways - #1. Is it a legal F or V to start with? Example Corn is illegal whether it's fresh, dried or organic so their " Just Corn " is out. The tomatoes are a legal food item so then looking at the dried tomatoes which are just dried in a dehydrator they would be legal. #2. Is the product they start with ripe enough before drying? Example. Most commercial dried bananas are not ripened to the extent that SCD needs them to be ripe. If they were the dried banana would arken with drying. They ususally start with insufficiently ripened bananas to get a nice white banana chip. This banana chip is going to be full of unconverted starches which will cause trouble in an SCDers' GI tract. 3. Is this something we can tolerate wheteher or not it is a legal and prepared properly? These Fruits and veggies are dried raw. Many can't tolerate the fiber in uncooked fruit or veggies. To go further than this the removal of water during the dehydration process makes these foods even more difficult to digest and brings a large hit of fiber and in some cases concentrated legal carbs - too much for some. Bottom line: if you have substantial improvements and are symptom free some of the Just tomato products may be okay for you but some are illegal. A good read is " Dried Fruit " at the Knowledge base of http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/a_to_f.htm > I also contacted Knudsens about their juices. Again, > they concentrate their juice with nothing added and then rehydrate it > with filtered water to allow them the variety of juice all year round. Elaine worked with the Knudsen company a couple of years ago investigating their product lines. Both Elaine and the Knudsen company agreed that *only* the Just juice line fit into the parameters required for SCD legality. Despite what is on a label there is so much more that goes into juice production. I could write pages on it but will save you from that Instead here's the list of SCD legal commercial juices: -Tropicana Pure premium OJ -Dole pineapple juice -Heinz and 's Tomato juice -The Knudsen's *Just Juice* line (not the rest of their products): Just Black Cherry Just Blueberry Just Cranberry Just Pomegranate Organic Just Concord Grape Organic Just Tart Cherry -Kedeem grape juice -Welch's 100% Grape juice (Red, Purple and white) You can also juice fruits and veggies at home. But all juices (commercial or homemade) should be diluted for at least the first month or so. (I still dilute juices when I have them) The > Could I be confident enough to give these snacks and drinks to my > daughter who is following the SCD and making good progress? You have to ask yourself is she able to tolerate dried fruits and veggies yet. If yes, you might want to try small amounts of dried fruit and veggies first before going to large amounts like would be in these bars of dried fruit and veggie snacks. And if you notics a return of any symptoms wheteher it is with home dried or commercially dried fruits and veggies either decrease the amount of dried foods or stop them for a while. Dried fruits and veggies although a handy and fun treat shouldn't be a staple of our diet. > > Are beets legal? Yes, beets are legal, although not tolerated by all. I saw the ingredient-sodium lactate from beets, on a > package of Apple gate Farms organic beef. I read somewhere where AF > products are used on this diet. There has been some trouble with applegate and changing of ingredients lately, so I don't know where things stand with them at the moment. (Were they changing their formulation again?) > Could I also be confident of giving > her the ground beef burgers which are 100% meat according to the label > and man I spoke to on the phone? Are these made by applegate? If you are confident that the beef burger is 100% beef you could try them. How is your daughter doing since being on the diet?
