Confusion about yogurt

Dear All,

Liam has been more stimmy and whiny the past few days than (perhaps) ever

before. We have been giving him small amounts (~1/2 teaspoon per day) of the

goat's milk yogurt for a few days. My husband is nervous that it is the

casein and I am hoping that it is just severe die-off. (His HPHPA level on

the OAT was 1120 [when 150 is the high end of normal] and so I'm hoping that

the yogurt is driving out the bad bacteria in a big way and that this is

bacterial die-off.) My husband wants to pull the yogurt and I must say that

he is almost convincing me. I know this is a common dilemma when introducing

the yogurt. Liam has also become more finnicky about his food (after several

days of being more open to different foods). One compromise would be to give

Liam the activated charcoal (and the yogurt) and see if the whininess and

stims decrease--as this would suggest it is die-off. How have others

administered this charcoal? Any suggestions or comments? Perhaps we have

tried the yogurt too soon and we should reintroduce it in several weeks

after his gut is more healed?

Thanks,

Audrey

Did you try a legal goat cheese before you introduced the yogurt? Some

people do that because it will let them know if their child can handle the

dairy products at all. If you start with the goat yogurt, and your child

have questionable reactions, you might not be able to discern whether it is

die-off or dairy intolerance. You could pull the yogurt, wait a few days,

and then try a legal goat cheese. If you start seeing these same reactions,

then you could probably assume that it is dairy causing the problem. If

not, then I'd go back to the yogurt, and assume the behaviors were due to

die-off. I hope that it is die-off because that will eventually improve,

and you should really start seeing some progress after that.

Hi Audrey,

It sounds as if this may be die off.

I think you should stop the yogurt for at least a few days. When

ready to restart go even smaller with 1/8 tsp and skip a day in

between. Many have found that the epsom salt baths and/or activated

charcoal really help reduce/eliminate the die off symptoms.

As you go you should be able to gradually increase the amounts.

With such high numbers of nasty microbes die off symptoms are much

more likely. Keeping it low should help him adjust.
