My son is six-months-old and has gone for two scans with Orthomerica at

CHOA. His CR is 97 (was 98 one month earlier) and we are taking him back

in two weeks. He has been spending more time on his tummy during the day

and off his head at night. I am new to the group and seeking advice.

What kind of improvement would be reasonable to expect and what criteria

did you use to decide whether to go with the Starband helmet? Thanks!

My daughter wore a starband for brachy. She started at about 96% and graduated

at 85%. Her head is still not perfect due to some wierd angles/bumps. The extra

width won't reduce, but you can direct new growth to the back so the proportions

are more balanced. I would definitely recommend banding. She wore the band from

age 5 to 10 mo old. We took her back at 14 mo for a check and she had grown, but

the growth was evenly distributed since she wasn't wearing a band. So she didn't

get any correction post-band. I think without a band your son may always have a

misshapen head.

At the time we banded we didn't know about all the options. We went with a good

starband ortho, but I would also recommend cranial tech if one is available.

Their staff is generally very well trained. If you go with starband make sure

your ortho has good experience treating brachy.
