Guest guest
we are going to try to start our 2 1/2 yr old on the intro diet tomorrow. he is onto us and has already gone on a food strike because we have been hiding some of the scd foods in his babyfood jars in preparation for the diet. we literally had to hold his hands down and wait til he was crying with his mouth open to shovel in 1/2 of a pureed fresh pear. this will be the 1st piece of fresh fruit he has ever eaten. we had to put it in a babyfood jar that we saved. that was all he ate all day except for juicese and some raisins. we stopped giving him cow's milk over 2 wks ago and stopped refined sugar so he has not been snacking all day on cornpops & cocoa puffs. his stools are already more solid. i dread tomorrow. if he goes several days without eating any of the starter menu should we try to add a few other items that may interest him? or just hold out until we get a couple days of that menu into him. does it matter if we only get half of the items into him? is it alright to make the cheesecake without the yogurt? should i add more of the dccc if i eliminate yogurt. is their a store brand of yogurt i can buy until i figure out where to buy a yogurt maker? what is the recipe for gelatin? which juice works best and what sweetener should i buy? He should be getting COOKED pured fruit at the startthis will be the 1st piece of fresh fruit he > has ever eaten. we had to put it in a babyfood jar that we saved. > that was all he ate all day except for juicese and some raisins. Being partially on SCD may help you but you can estimate what's going on better when you officially get on the plan. Expect resistance and negativity at first and have a lot of patience. Changes are difficult and acceptance and adjustment can take time plus the challenge of the initial die off of the starving bad bacteria. It will be worth it ultimately. we > stopped giving him cow's milk over 2 wks ago and stopped refined > sugar so he has not been snacking all day on cornpops & cocoa puffs. > his stools are already more solid. i dread tomorrow. if he goes > several days without eating any of the starter menu should we try to > add a few other items that may interest him? or just hold out until > we get a couple days of that menu into him. does it matter if we > only get half of the items into him? Stick to the " Intro diet for from 2-5 days. (Three will probably be long enough if he doesn't have severe diarrhea.) > > is it alright to make the cheesecake without the yogurt? s Definitely; the recipe works without the yogurt and will even be firmer. No ned for gelatin in my opinion. Just refrigerate it and let it set. Carol F. SCD 6 years
Guest guest
Remember that the pears must be cooked. Pureed, fresh fruit is not for a new scder. Make sure that you peal, seed, and cook all fruits and vegies for quite some time. You cannot give your son any store bought yogurt. I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you're giving him a good probiotic. We waited about six weeks before trying the yogurt. Just make sure that he's getting his calcium elsewhere. You can buy the Knox unflavored gelatin, and follow the recipe on the box. We've used a variety of scd legal juices, but usually use grape juice. Don't worry. He will come around. I think that you've accomplished a lot by pulling out the snacky type foods like Cherios, chips, ect. Good luck Meleah gelatin & cheesecake? > we are going to try to start our 2 1/2 yr old on the intro diet > tomorrow. he is onto us and has already gone on a food strike > because we have been hiding some of the scd foods in his babyfood > jars in preparation for the diet. we literally had to hold his hands > down and wait til he was crying with his mouth open to shovel in 1/2 > of a pureed fresh pear. this will be the 1st piece of fresh fruit he > has ever eaten. we had to put it in a babyfood jar that we saved. > that was all he ate all day except for juicese and some raisins. we > stopped giving him cow's milk over 2 wks ago and stopped refined > sugar so he has not been snacking all day on cornpops & cocoa puffs. > his stools are already more solid. i dread tomorrow. if he goes > several days without eating any of the starter menu should we try to > add a few other items that may interest him? or just hold out until > we get a couple days of that menu into him. does it matter if we > only get half of the items into him? > > is it alright to make the cheesecake without the yogurt? should i > add more of the dccc if i eliminate yogurt. is their a store brand > of yogurt i can buy until i figure out where to buy a yogurt maker? > > what is the recipe for gelatin? which juice works best and what > sweetener should i buy? > > > > > > > > > For information on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, please read the book > _Breaking the Vicious Cycle_ by Elaine Gottschall and read the following > websites: > http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info > and > http://www.pecanbread.com > >
Guest guest
Hi... I would do just two days of intro. Be sure that all your fruit is cooked in the beginning weeks/months. Also, raisins are considered an advanced food... but I know you were just trying to get him off the snacky cereals and using these for that reason. He just won't be able to have them for a while, once you're fully on SCD. There is no store bought yogurt that we can eat on SCD. None of them have been fermented for a full 24 hours, so they will contain lactose, even if the bacterial strains were okay and if they have no carrageenan or other illegals. We have to make our own. It's okay, though.... you don't *have* to start yogurt right away. In fact, we usually advise waiting some weeks... even a couple of months into SCD and then starting yogurt, simply because the powerful probiotics in it can trigger more die-off and confuse parents who think it looks like their child can't tolerate the dairy. Many kids have had a rough time right at the beginning... with not wanting to eat the SCD foods.... and losing their favorite starchy carbs. But, if he's like most of the other kids, he will come around and surprise you. Try not to get too upset or worried.... forcing him to eat is not necessary. Just provide him with plenty of options to try a bite or two, frequently throughout the day.... and keep him hydrated. He may not feel too chipper at first, if he starts having die-off symptoms... so remember that. He might be a bit nauseous even... so SMALL amounts of food, more frequently, will help. Does he like frozen things? You can freeze the grape juice... or make the grape jello for the intro diet and freeze the mixture into popsicles. Even if he just sucks on one a little bit, he'll be getting something. You don't *have* to have him eat ALL of the foods on the intro diet... those are just the foods that you are allowed to choose from. I know a couple of kids that ate nothing but grape jello for two days, refusing all other intro foods. Not ideal.... but acceptable. If he just simply refuses to eat ANYthing on the first day of intro, it can be up to you whether to do another day. You might want to call it good.... start with the simpler, beginner type foods... then go back and do another two days of intro later on, after he is more accepting of the new foods. Quite a few parents have done it this way. Doing intro really DOES give you a better chance of success.... but you don't need to have him totally fasting for two days, if he just WON'T eat ANYthing. So, keep in mind that you can always go back to it in a month... and it will give a jump start from there.
