I believe that a German physician, whose name I cannot recall, and a Swiss

physician named, I think, Bucholz, first noticed the connection with salt on

the infant's skin.

I have read before, and cannot locate it now, that the first description, was in

the

early 19th century, and that there were a few descriptions nearly two hundred

years

before that.
