Guest guest
Jazz, Constipation is common in the beginning. Mimi gave the links to the constipation protocol, so definitely follow that up. A magnesium supplement can help a lot... especially magnesium citrate. Are you using the nut flour muffins? They can help, too... but increase slowly. Patti curious question Ok, I think that most people have problems with D than C. Well, this is now day 4 on the SCD and I am severely constipated. I can imagine this is due to my decreased fluid intake. But, is there anything in the diet itself that could be causing this? I know that the first few days are designed to eliminate D. At least that is how I have interpreted what I have read. I haven't had a bowel movement since I started the SCD. I was used to having two a day. Maybe not the nicest of conversations, but constipation was one of my biggest problems before I began my treatments for microscopic colitis. Any suggestions? Guest guest
My three year old had the same thing happen. He went from two or three stools per day to none once we started the intro diet. After three days of intro, we started to move on to get the stools going again. You can try some prune juice if the grape juice isn't helping. Also, the green beans would be a good first food to introduce. That might eliminate the problem. Guest guest
Jazz, What brought me to SCD was constant, soft, mushy stool which just wouldn't " let go " when I was having a bowel movement. And urgency! Occassionally, I would have problems going at all, but that was rare. Elaine told us that constipation and diarrhea are opposite ends of the same spectrum -- both indicative of gut issues. Several people have recommended her prune protocol, but prunes and I didn't get along at all -- heck, me and most fruit didn't get along, which is a crime, considering how much I love blueberries and strawberries and cherries and... er, well, you get the picture.... In any case, what I found worked best for me was cooked vegetables. Most specifically, peeled and steamed zucchini. You can put butter or grated cheese on it, with butter being best for the intro diet. Later, grated cheddar, or grated parmesan, or grated romano or grated swiss... oh heck, I may as well acknowledge that I'm a cheesoholic! Anyway, grated cheese goes nicely on it. My father, non-SCD, who professes to hate squash, liked zucchini with sharp cheddar and parmesan! And, btw, I was serious about off list help in figuring out something to drink. OK? Because liquids will help with the constipation. -- Marilyn (New Orleans, Louisiana, USA) Undiagnosed IBS 25 Years, SCD Five Years Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
