Guest guest
Tammy, It honestly sounds to me more like the yogurt triggered some additional die-off, especially if you saw them improve afterwards, to even better than they were before. Some kids have really strong responses. It is POWERFUL stuff. You may have to go with just a TEENY SPECK to start with.... just a few drops, maybe. I think the ear infection was most likely a coincidence... but it's hard to know. Have they reacted to goat dairy before? What did you typically see before when they were reacting to casein pre-SCD? Having seen improvement following the bad stuff, if I were you, I'd be tempted to try again. I am inclined to believe it is die-off. best wishes, Patti 6 yr. old twins not tolerating yogurt...what to do? My twins have been scd since Jan. 06 and I decided it was time to introduce the goat's milk yogurt. I made it last Friday and my daughter was in the middle of a cold. Well, a few days later after starting the yogurt, it turned into an ear infection. I didn't know if this was related? Also, both started having very loose bm's with undigested (sorry, gross I know) food particals and my son was having terrible behavior. I stopped after their third day of the yogurt. Keep in mind that I did as told and started with 1/8 of a tsp., then 1/4, and then 1/2 of the yogurt each day. My son also developed a " yeast " rash on his left bottom cheek. The two days following were much better after I stopped giving it to them; the bm's were better formed and the behavior was way better, almost better than before the yogurt. So, I decided on Friday to start it up again and gave it again today also. Well, they have both had 4-5 really bad and runny bm's and my son's behavior is again off the charts, plus he's been coughing a lot and wheezing as he picked up the tail end of her cold. Is it a die off reaction that they are having and yeast and bacteria is coming out of them, or is it the casein in the milk that they can't tolerate? Should I give up or is this encouraging? Should I just give them 1/4 tsp. every Friday after school so it can help them but not over power their little systems? Any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tammy
Guest guest
Patti, Die off is what I suspected but I thought, how could this be, we had a huge die off in Jan. when first starting the diet. Can you have more than one die off? I am temporarily stopping the yogurt until my sons cold goes away, but I have continued to give it to my daughter and she has had a huge change with her bowels. I know that something is changing in her little sytem. Also, they had never had any type of goat products before this and their reaction to dairy was usually coughing, wheezing, and eventually an ear infection. Unfortunately we had to put her on an anti-biotic for her current ear infection, but I space out the yogurt to 4-5 hours in between getting it. I am very interested in knowing about all of the properties of the yogurt and why it is so powerful. I'm going to do a search on it, but any additional info on it would be appreciated! Thanks again for all of the help, this group has saved my life! Guest guest
Hi Tammy, Starting SCD yogurt does often trigger new die-off symptoms. Yes, you CAN have additional die-off. Sometimes there are some really resistant bacteria hanging on by their fingernails down there... or yeast colonies that have set up camp in the space where the bacteria used to live. Yeast REALLY doesn't like the good bacteria in the yogurt. If you feel like what you're seeing is more like the dairy reactions you saw pre-SCD, you need to follow your instincts. It could be that their guts just have not healed enough yet to tolerate it. We always try to carefully observe what's going on, though... to be sure we're not confusing die-off symptoms with dairy reaction. Often, the benefits of yogurt begin to outweigh any negative... and the negative things eventually prove to be temporary. But you are the mom! So trust your instincts! VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION: Before now, have you used SCD nut milk yogurt? Or an acidophilus supplement? If so, how have they tolerated the supplement or the nut yogurt? No issues? If you have not used either one...and no dairy yogurt either.... since starting SCD in January, I am concerned about possible yeast issues. It's just so crucial that the kids get an acidophilus supp or nut yogurt if they can't have the goat yogurt. Since your daughter is taking antibiotics right now, you DEFINITELY need to get at LEAST an acidophilus supplement down her once she is all done taking the antibiotic, as it will be killing off any good flora she had to begin with and setting her up for imbalance in her gut again. Let me search around and see what saved posts I might have on the benefits of yogurt and anything else that might be relevant. patti Re: 6 yr. old twins not tolerating yogurt...what to do? Guest guest
Patti, They have both been on the Kirkman's scd legal acidophilus supplement with no troubles, but to be honest I never could see any positives from it or changes of any kind period. I am really concerned about my daughter taking the antibiotic and losing good flora, but I was hoping that spacing the yogurt between her dosings would help replenish it. We really tried hard to have her get over the infection on her own, but after a week of being sick with it and having a fever we had to give in. The doc said it was bacterial. Thanks again for the yogurt help. I'm personally excited about it! I really have a good feeling that if I keep trying little amounts for my son maybe once a week, that he'll make great gains once all of the garbage leaves him. ) Tammy > > Hi Tammy, > > Starting SCD yogurt does often trigger new die-off symptoms.
