I am married, have four children and I am a OB RN ( who is not working at this time due to ulcers, acid reflux and the stress of it all!). I have been overweight for as long as I can remember. Right now I weigh 246lbs ( I am 5'6 " ). I have tried all the diets out there, as I am sure everyone here has. You know the cycle, loose 5 lbs, gain back 10!! ((snip)) I wake up in the mornings and feel like pulling the covers up over my head and staying in bed forever. ((snip)) Anyhow, I found Dr. R's website and I am so fasinated by it!! I sounds safer than RNY I have been reading about. I am very interested in learning more about your experiences and deciding if this is the right for surgery for me. Thanks for " listening " Cindy>>>>> ********************************************* Welcome Cindy! For learning about the MBG, you have come to the right place. For understanding about how weight effects our daily lives, you have come to the right place. You will find quite a few here on this list are also present or past medical professionals as well. I think there are a couple doctors, quite a few nurses, and I was a respiratory terrorist... er... therapist. My reaction when I found the MGB was very similar to yours. I also had been researching numberous WLS options when I literally stumbled onto Dr. Rutledge's website. I have to say the statistics are extremely impressive. I was amazed that this surgery could be done so safely with such a low complication rate in only (approximately) 40 minutes, laparoscopically, and with an inpatient stay as short as one day! (And for an average of 1/4 the expense of other WLS options.) What *most* caught my eye, though, was all the positive things his patients had to say about their experiences postoperatively. I'd never seen such positive feedback for any surgeon OR procedure. WOW! I am pre-op right now, waiting for my date on November 1st. (I'm only scheduled that far out due to my request.) I believe so firmly in Dr. Rutledge and the MGB that I am flying out from Washington state. My advise is to pour over the website at http://clos.net and learn all you can about the MGB and the comparison in complication rates, average hospital stays, and other statistics between it and the other procedures. Whatever decision you make, whether it is for the MGB or another WLS, you owe it to yourself to make the most informed one you can. The road to approval for the MGB takes a lot of work. But, in the end, it is worth it in the knowledge gained. If you have questions about the MGB, this is a great place to ask. You will find a wealth of information and experience! My very best! Guest guest
Dear Jenn, Congratulations on your Nov 1st date! You are coming a long way for this surgery, but it will all be worth it. I had surgery Aug 30, and have been back home three days now. I was the first from Ca. and I know not the last, as another California girl has just been approved. The trip home was not easy, but I had too take three flights to get there. The first flight from Durham to Dallas was just about a foot off the landing strip when the engines roared and we took off again, after what seemed to be a very long time the pilot told everyone that another plane was still on the same runway, and we would have run into it Yikes!!! We then of course missed our next flight after fast walking for a mile at least and then had to fly standby stuck in the middle seat between two men. When I finally arrived home I fell into bed and didn't move for the next 11 hours. All and all I think the flight home was worse than the surgery. I hope you can get a direct flight that would have been so much easier. I am sure your experience will be great, didn't mean to bring you down. Glad I am on the other side.
