This does sound like die off.

It depends on how severe his overgrowth is.

You could try epsom salt baths and/or activated charcoal. See

Hi Jeyanthi

We are on day 10 of the diet and my 2 year old was so sick day 3 and 4 .

He cried most of the time, was very weak...could hardly walk, yet had trouble

sleeping. He also had vomiting and constipation.

All this is normal and by day 5 he was looking and feeling better. He started

eating more and the constipation ended.

it was awful for me to see him like this and I kept thinking am I doing the

right thing but we are now seeing improvments.

Epson salt baths definately helped as did activated charcole.

Good luck with it all.

Hi,

I've been trying to send this message to the group and failed twice.

So please excuse me if it appears multiple times.

I'm new to this group. My 2yr old ASD son is on SCD diet and it's the

2nd day. He looks so...tired/weak and worn off. He is also constipated

since the change of diet. I guess that this is the die-off symptom.

Please let me know if I'm wrong. What can I do to help him? and how

long these symptoms are supposed to last?

thanks

Hi J-

Have you had any responses to your email. Today is the start of day

3 for my 4 year old and we are experiencing the same lethargy and he

even spit up a bit of mucous. He is currently lying on the sofa

watching tv and sleeping.

Hi guys,

I haven't posted in a while, but wanted you guys to know

that my little boy did the same thing at the beginning of the diet.

We even carried him to urgent care because he was so lethargic

he could barely hold his head up and slept all day and didn't eat.

This only lasted a couple of days and he was fine. I wish I had

known then about activated charcoal capsules and epsom salt baths.

They will be fine, just be sure they get enough liquids and carbs.

My son is on day 4 of the diet and he is extremely lethargic and has

slight fever. He also refuses to eat anything. He had his bowel

movement yesterday which was large in quantity and foul smelling.

Today he just want to drink water and laying on the bed or couch all

the time and whining.

My husband is scolding me for keeping him on this diet. He says that

keeping him on this diet is dangerous as he loses water and that may

deplet minerals etc... etc...

I really don't know if I'm doing right by keeping my 2yr old in this

diet. I desperately need help.

Thanks

What you are seeing right now is most likely due to die-off. This is very

common.... and should be temporary. Has your husband read the book? Were you

both expecting him not to have any bacterial die-off when starting SCD?

It is actually a sign that GOOD things are to come. Please understand that you

WANT to see the bad gut bugs dying off.... unfortunately they do give off

toxins when they die. That will make him feel like he has the flu.

If it goes on too long and you feel uncomfortable with the symptoms, by all

means consult your doctor or stop the diet if you feel something is wrong.

Are you giving him epsom salts baths? That would help make him much more

comfortable.

There is the recipe for an SCD legal electrolyte drink from Elaine's website....

it would help restore the fluids and help him feel better:

Electrolyte drink

1 quart boiled water

2 tbsp. honey

1/4 tsp. of salt

1/4 tsp.baking soda

Can be kept in refrigerator for 24 hours, and then a new batch should be made.

What you are seeing is the bad bugs dying off in his gut. He doesn't feel

well right now because of that, but he will begin to feel better soon. The

foul smelling stool is also due to this. Don't give up. Just continue

slowly on the diet, and watch. You will see the results soon.
