DAN! nutritionist & supps

I called yesterday to see if I could exchange my regular Brainchild

II supps for the ultra sensitive & my son's DAN! nutritionist (where

I got them from) told me they are fine for SCD & even the probiotics

we use (with bifidum) & to " ignore all that " . This has me concerned,

because my ASD son is 12ys old, severe, & lots of things that

typically help others have not helped but made him worse. I feel

like if I'm going to do this for him I've got to do it all out, for

all of us.

I'm not posting this to encourage anyone to " ignore " all the illegal

supps, but actually because I'm concerned about this advice & need

some input. She also wanted to speak with me before I start so I

have a phone consult scheduled for next week (she was adament she

needed to speak with me first).

Is this typical DAN! advice when starting SCD? What have others

experiences been with their practitioners?

Also, if anyone feels particular supplements (illegal ones) held

back your child's progress on SCD I'd like to hear about it too. I

need more info before my consult with her so I can really discuss

this. May post offlist.

Again, I'm not trying to divert anyone, I just need help,

experiences, & information here.

Thanks very much,

Michele

I'd be concerned, too. How can she say that you should follow scd when she

says that some of the protocall is a crock. If you don't follow scd

protocall, then you're not really doing scd. I don't have any specifics on

questions that I think should be asked of her at your phone consultation.

I'd just be concerned. I'll give it some thought, and let you know if I

come up with anything.

Michele,

SCD is really only effective when done with 100% fanatisism. That includes

taking legal supplements when you can. Some of us have meds with illegals in

them but that's the nature of the beast and we take them anyway.

Did your DAN! recommend SCD? I find it disturbing that he or she would say

" ignore all that " and still promote SCD. When possible, you want to comply with

SCD with legal supplements.

Actually, no, I have not spoken to her about SCD at all - yet. I had

tried it half heartedly a few years ago but of course that didn't

work out well & I had no support at the time. My son has been GFCF

for almost 5yrs & me & baby for several months. My holistic

practitioner regards SCD highly & has seen many of her autistic

patients benefit from it so she recommended it really for me, but

knowing I have an ASD son so I could do it for everyone. I only

called the DAN! nutritionist because I wanted to exchange the

Brainchild & explained why to her office worker, who called her, &

then called me back to relay that information & to say she wanted to

speak with me first. He did also say they have other kids on SCD in

her practice but since I've never spoken to her about it personally

I don't know what her attitude is or what she'll recommend, except

that she said to " ignore all that " on the supps.

She's been somewhat helpful but not to the degree that I'm not

questioning of her; I question what she's saying greatly & am

wondering if I even want to pay for the consult (not free!). It

could be helpful, or not.

Thanks, Michele

I am new at this too, and I am also with a Dan Dr. I called up to order new

supplements and to let them know I was switching gears with my son, as I

felt the GFCF wasn't doing enough for him. They did not request a

consult, nor did I feel like I personally needed one as they are big

advocates of gfcf at our facility, and the best advice I have gotten has

been from pecanbread. I don't know what the reason for a consult would be,

other than to try and prepare you for whats to come. I thought I had a

handle on it and what to expect....but I felt like I was going crazy, as we

had seen the worst die off he has ever had(not trying to scare you, just

thought this might be a reason they wanted a consult). my Dan didn't even

offer it, and I found myself putting out sos on pecanbread about every day

for the first week. I also made Some minor mistakes in the beginning, which

caused me to have to start over. They did not tell me to check my

supplements,my good friends here did, thus the mistake. Maybe it wouldn't be

a bad idea, if the consults are not astronomical. If they are expensive,

Stick with these guys, so far NOONE has steered me wrong! I hope this helps,

if I can help in any way please email me personally. I have heard of

peoplewho start around the same time sometimes keeping a journal and

exchanging notes together,to see what kinds of things happen at what

times.- mom to Dylan ASD- " diagnosed " 2003.

Anyone who says you should do SCD but " ignore all that " and use illegal

supplements and probiotics with bifidus... simply does not understand the diet.

This, unfortunately, seems to happen frequently with the DAN (and other)

practitioners. They seem to think they can pick and choose what they want to

prescribe from SCD.... but allow all kinds of other things along with it....

which demonstrates a lack of true understanding of SCD and how it works.

Sadly, a fair number of families will end up being disappointed by the results

they get.
