Guest guest
Hi Becky, >> I don't know if he has yeast or not. We went to a doctor, does Dan protocol, who said based on some of his symptoms she was confident he did have build up. She said they were " classic symptoms " . Some of the usual yeastie symptoms we see posted to the list are thrush, skin rashes, itchy rash, itchy red bottom, diarrhea or Constipation, sweet cravings (illegal or legal foods like candy or lots of bananas etc...). behaviour symptoms like giggling. There is some info that may be helpful at " Yeast and SCD " in the file section at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/pecanbread/files/ > I'm just getting confused, there's so much to figure out. The only thing he will eat is stuff he ate prior to the diet. Currently he's eating, canned pears in their own juice, unsweeted applesauce, colby cheese and Welch's juice. I don't think the pears are SCD legal. What is the brand and exactly what does the ingredient list say on the can? Commercial applesauce is not legal, you really need to make your own. For details on why this is important please read, http://pecanbread.com/foodprep.html#homemade The colby cheese is legal and the welch's should be diluted with at least half water (especially impt. if he has yeast issues when starting the diet. >I have slipped some chicken broth from the homemade chicken soup, in his juice at most 5 tablespoons at once and he will take that. That's great >Everything that i thought he would eat, chicken nuggets, waffles, spaghetti (squash) and pizza- he wont touch.. If still going through die off his yeast are still craving the sweet stuff. This is a powerful urge. ....I don't blame him, my food prep skills STINK and they taste NOTHING like what we had before. My waffles were awful, they were thin with no substance, like paper. I've been grinding my own almonds, but am not sure if they meet " flour " standards, they look like the $17 bag I saw at the health food store, but what i cook with them always looks nothing like I expected. I'm doing the diet with him, so i understand why he won't eat some of it.... Is it ok for him to eat fruit and cheese only???????? Will he eat any meats? You could try some of the sneaky pancake recipes at http://pecanbread.com/recipes.html There is one for chicken pancakes and another tatsy one for sneaky veggie pancakes. How were his bowel movements preSCD and since starting the diet. It may be a bit soon to start the nut flour but if his bm's are pretty good then he could be fine to start them now. I'm > concerned about the natural sugar in the fruit being detrimental. In respect to yeast the Yeast and SCD file covers that. Otherwise, the natural sugars in the legal fruits should be fine as long as he tolerates the manner in which they are presented. If he is okay with raw (no behavioural or bowel symp.s) than okay but if he has symptoms with raw fruits and veggies than you probably need to start him on peeled and cooked fruits and veggies. > He's 3, no diagnosis of autism yet. Has severe language delays and sensory issues- mostly vestibular and propreoceptive. Within last month, hand flapping, repetition of phrases from videos, talking jibberish to the wall etc have started up. I'm a psychologist, fighting with medicial doctors over correct diagnosis. He's on the Autism spectrum somewhere! He has a history of poop ranging from diarreha to constipation since age two. It's never consistent. Currently hasn't pooped since we started diet on Monday. Thanks so much for any help!!!! Since he swings back and forth between C and D starting with the intro and gradually adding in more complex to digest foods would probably be best. Guest guest
The doctor we saw said something about his spells when he is " zoned out " and his high pain tolerance being signs of yeast. (unless i got that part confused with a sign of some other symptom) He never has really had rashes etc... but your comment about giggling hit a cord. He will laugh out loud for no reason or may laugh at something funny then he will further make himself laugh. His pooh is dark grey and a little gritty kind of the consistency of mashed potatoes. Which i am assuming is normal for the beginning of this diet???? Prior he was having fairly normal poohs with the occasional weird ones. He started the probiotic (kirkman's) about 4 days prior to starting the diet. (the first day on it the babysitter said he had the most normal pooh since's she's had him). Since he is on the probiotic should he not eat the yogurt??? I'm a little confused on that one. He is now eating food. He ate the chicken nugget recipe someone recently posted and will eat 5-6 at a time with homemade applesauce or steamed pears. Will eat cheese too. But he is still sooo hungry. Is there a specific BACON that is ok.... He loves bacon! He will only eat chicken and bacon- no beef. I actually made pancakes that looked like pancakes and sorta tastes like them, but he won't touch them. He did put one in his mouth, began to chew and spit out. I guess he's just used to the way things used to taste and we will have to keep trying. Tried the chicken pancakes and banana pancakes - no luck (don't blame him they were yucky). I've searched the internet for HOURS looking at recipes-- I'm tired of cooking- but will continue. Everyday I look for any changes and nothing yet. I read about 3 weeks before noticable changes. Also curious as to what is the typical first change most people see--- if there is a typical one. I just need to see some evidence that this truely will cause some change in him to reinforce the need to proceed, you know?!! One last question- how do you know when it's ok to move up stages. What should the pooh look like to show you he's ready for nut flour etc... You guys have really been a BLESSING to me, without you I would have seriously screwed this up. May God bless you for checking your emails and responding to all of us lost newbies!!!! Work in progress Becky - son ASD Sheila Trenholm wrote: Hi Becky, >> I don't know if he has yeast or not. Guest guest
The weird looking stools is totally normal during die off. Scarey what's living in their little bodies, isn't it? Yes, go ahead and give him probiotics and yogurt. That's fine. We do both in our house, but did the probiotic only before we reintroduced dairy about five weeks into scd. I'm not sure about a legal bacon, but I think a couple of people may use something. You can use proscuto. There's really no typical first sign of improvement. It's so different for every person. It could be improved stools...actually maybe that would be the most common one. I think that a lot of people see the improved bowel movements before they ever see a sign of behavioral symptoms. They just don't always think of it as a sign of improvement. I can tell you to check the pecan bread achives for recipes. My kids love pretty much everything that Carol or Marilyn have ever posted. No offense to anyone else because I have gotten some great recipes here and there from others on this list. I've pretty much always gotten a great response from my family with a Marilyn or Carol recipe though, and they even ask for me to make it frequently. Oh, the incredible appetitite is very normal, too. His body is working overtime to clean itself out and absorb nutrition that it has been deprived of for a long time. Just offer him food often. Have it available for him. He may need snacks more frequently in the beginning. Meleah Re: Re: 3- days into diet and CONFUSED!!! Guest guest
Hi Becky, << His pooh is dark grey and a little gritty kind of the consistency of mashed potatoes. Which i am assuming is normal for the beginning of this diet???? Prior he was having fairly normal poohs with the occasional weird ones.>> The change in color may be from the die off of harmful microbes. See http://pecanbread.com/badreaction.html The stool consistency change may also be from die off. <<He started the probiotic (kirkman's) about 4 days prior to starting the diet. (the first day on it the babysitter said he had the most normal pooh since's she's had him). Since he is on the probiotic should he not eat the yogurt??? >> He can eat the yogurt and take the probiotic. The Progurt doesn't have L. acdiophilus so supplementing it in a Probiotic is a fine idea. <<But he is still sooo hungry.>> Increased hunger is very common in those just starting the diet. Some of the reasons: -they don't feel sick anymore and actually get their appetite back, -their body is switching from rumen type digestion to actual human digestion, -their body is healing (which will burn extra calories), -and especially in children on the diet many have reported huge growth spurts after starting SCD. Their body is able to continue normal growth patterns now that it is absorbing nutrients whereas preSCD many have reported their kids were at the lower percentiles for weight and height. This alone accounts for a large portion of the increased appetite. << Is there a specific BACON that is ok.... He loves bacon!>> Regular smoked bacon is okay once a week if it is fried very crisply. There are also many bacons now that are smoked without sugar. Some of these are the low sodium brands. In Canada, the " Maple Leaf Brand 33 1/3 less salt bacon " is sugar free. In the US there are a number of available brands that are legal depending om where you live. Since he's still going through die off I'd only add a little bit of the bacon and see first how it affects the stools. The fat of the bacon is a harder to digest food. << Everyday I look for any changes and nothing yet. I read about 3 weeks before noticable changes. Also curious as to what is the typical first change most people see >> You've already had some changes with his stool ( " babysitter said he had the most normal pooh since's she's had him " ) and now with the die off stools. Are you giving him the epsom salt baths? << One last question- how do you know when it's ok to move up stages. What should the pooh look like to show you he's ready for nut flour etc...>> You probably should wait until you see a more solid stool before trying the nut flours.
