Tracie,

I live in the southwest corner of the state, Nevada, Missouri. I think we

are really opting to fly. My husband is afraid that all the giggling in the

car in the way back would loosen something. Thanks for the tip for the low

airfare. Even though the insurance told me Tuesday I was denied (over the

phone) I still do not have the hard copy of the letter. It's kind of hard

to fire off an appeal letter when you don't know in writing why you were

denied in the first place. For me, I will find a way to finance this and

then recoup my costs from them. I'm hoping that watching the movie where

Matt Damon brings down the insurance company who denies everyone for a year

will help. Keep in touch.

Dear Ruqayya,

They all had their surgery in 1980. Talk about a rough experience compared

to what we're in for. All spent at least a week in the Intensive Care Unit

and then another week on the general medical floor before they were

discharged. My mom weighed about 400 (not that she would ever tell us) and

dropped to about 180 in a year and one half. Over the past three years she

really had trouble swallowing anything (but particularly breads and any

meats.) Last year she finally required an esophageal opening - the doctor

said directly related to her original surgery. She has gained about 20 lbs

in the past year but has leveled off now. My aunt who had the surgery (also

around 425) is a mess. She dropped about 100 pounds that first year but

then went right back to her original eating habits and " stretched "

everything back out. She weighs more now than she ever did to begin with.

My uncle actually weighed the most (probably closer to 450) and has

maintained a weight around 250 for the past twenty years. The thing I

remember most about all three (even though I was married and did not live at

home when my Mom had hers) is that they could puke at the drop of the hat.

To be frank, I remember someone farting and my mother puking. The smells or

thoughts of food would make her puke. I have really paid close attention to

postings regarding post operative nausea because I don't relish the thought

of praying to the porcelain god.

Speaking of God. Our God is an AWESOME GOD !!! I got a surgery date this

morning (Sept. 28) and my head is still spinning. One week ago tomorrow I

was in the depths of depression because my insurance company denied my

letter. I am proceeding on without their approval (and looking for creative

financing) because the time is right for me. I have an uncanny peace about

the whole process. My reservations were made without a hitch.(I mean hotel,

air, car everything) With three children and both busy professional

schedules everything fit. My Dad, who recently retired, is even going to

come and stay with the children to provide transportation (they are 10, 12,

14, and don't like the idea of a " babysitter " !)

Thanks for your inquiry and I look forward to hearing back from you soon.
